Knoxville Mourns the Loss of Golf Legend Gary Lyons Toulson

Knoxville, TN, is reeling from the news of the passing of a true golf legend, Gary Lyons Toulson, who left us at the age of 86 on February 8, 2025. His family shared that he succumbed to pneumonia and complications stemming from Parkinson’s Disease, a battle he bravely fought for many years. Gary’s legacy is one marked by his remarkable character—he was known for his grace, kindness, and unwavering support of family and friends.

A Life Well-Lived

Born on December 23, 1938, in Endicott, New York, Gary was the son of Helen Grace Scrafford and John Norman Toulson. Tragically, he lost his father to cancer when he was just five years old. Life threw several challenges his way early on; at the age of seven, he contracted polio, leading to temporary paralysis in his legs and weakness in his upper body. Yet, these challenges only fueled his determination. With the mentorship of an assistant pro at Enjoie Golf Club, he not only rehabbed but also honed his skills in golf.

Gary attended Union-Endicott High School and later Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida, where he excelled in both golf and basketball. He clinched the title of New York State Junior Golf Champion and continued his athletic journey by serving as the varsity captain in both sports at The Manlius Military and Preparatory School, graduating in 1957.

The Path to Golf Stardom

His love for golf led him to join the US Army Special Forces during the Cold War, where he focused on intelligence and tactics. After his honorable service, Gary pursued his passion by attending the inaugural PGA school in Clearwater, FL. He kicked off his professional career at Higby Hills Country Club, nurtured his craft at Ridgefield Country Club, and ultimately took the helm at Green Meadow Country Club in Maryville, TN, before making his mark as the head professional at Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville.

During his impressive 34-year tenure at Cherokee, Gary established a notable junior program. His passion led his students to astounding heights; many went on to win collegiate, amateur, and professional tournaments, some even becoming golf professionals themselves. His legacy will forever be etched in the hearts of those he mentored.

A Journey of Challenges and Triumph

In 2006, Gary faced a new challenge: a diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease. While the condition progressively limited his ability to play the game he adored, he redirected his focus towards helping others. His spirit remained indomitable, as he organized fundraising and support initiatives aimed at raising awareness for Parkinson’s.

Celebrating His Life

Gary will be remembered not just for his accolades—as a past recipient of the Tennessee PGA Section Distinguished Career Award and the Golf Digest’s Top Golf Teachers in America, among others—but for the love he shared with his family. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carole Hanafin Toulson, after 58 years of marriage. He leaves behind three children: Alexis Toulson, Suzanne Toulson Donovan, and Christopher Toulson. His influence extends to his grandchildren and a niece, all of whom carry his spirit forward.

A Holy Mass and Celebration of Life are scheduled for March 28, 2024, at 10:00 AM at the Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in Knoxville. Donations in Gary’s memory can be made to the PJ Parkinson’s Support and The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. Those wishing to share their condolences can do so online.

As Knoxville reflects on a life filled with achievement, love, and dedication to the sport, Gary Lyons Toulson will forever be a cherished part of the community’s golfing history.
