Albany Community Remembers Beloved Local Golf Enthusiast and Philanthropist
Albany, GA, is in mourning as it bids farewell to a cherished member of the community, Robert Marc Matre Jr. The local golf aficionado and renowned philanthropist passed away on December 26, 2024, at the age of 80. His absence leaves a void in many hearts, as friends, family, and fellow enthusiasts reflect on his vibrant life and the legacy he leaves behind.
A Life Well-Lived
Robert Marc Matre Jr. was born on October 23, 1944, at Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta, GA. However, his family moved shortly after his birth, and he grew up in Albany, GA, where he developed a passion for golf while living in a home that overlooked the scenic Radium Country Club. This early exposure to the game fueled a lifelong love for the sport.
His educational journey took him to Albany High School before he graduated from Georgia Military Academy, now known as Woodward Academy, in Atlanta. Matre further pursued his passion for golf by playing at both Florida Southern University and Jacksonville University. This commitment to golf not only shaped his teenage years but also allowed him to form lasting friendships throughout his life.
Family Life and Career
Robert married Judy Camblin, and the couple started a family in Jacksonville, FL. He worked at Sealand Corp. at the Port of Jacksonville before relocating back to Albany in 1975. Matre joined Lilliston Corporation as the Logistics Manager until the company moved in 1986. He continued to work in trucking with various companies, including Silver Eagle and Southern Ag, until he semi-retired in 2006. At this point, he became the CFO of Matre Forestry Consulting, where he enjoyed collaborating with his son Mike.
His sons, Rob and Mike, were not just his pride and joy, but also his golfing companions. Robert introduced them to the link at Doublegate and Radium, creating treasured memories on the course. The family often enjoyed fishing trips during their childhood, further solidifying their close bond.
A Man of Many Passions
Beyond golf and family, Matre had a deep appreciation for music. He was particularly fond of Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones, often humming their tunes while reminiscing about his youth. Additionally, his devotion to Georgia football was legendary. Robert made it a tradition to attend University of Georgia games, with the highlight being the 1981 Sugar Bowl, where he celebrated Georgia’s victory over Notre Dame, a pivotal moment in college football history.
Giving Back to the Community
Robert Matre was not just a golf lover; he was a compassionate member of the Albany community. Active in local organizations, he served two terms as president of the Kiwanis Club and played a significant role in the Salvation Army. His contributions to the community, along with his artistry appreciation for his son Rob’s work, have left an indelible mark. A longtime member of First Methodist Church in Albany, he also attended Americus Baptist Temple with his son Mike and family.
