Jacksonville Gears Up for a Colorful Day at the Art in the Park Chalk Art Competition!
Mark your calendars, Jacksonville! On March 29th, 2025, the highly anticipated Art in the Park chalk art competition makes its grand return for the fifth year in a row. This year, the event is bringing a splash of creativity with the theme “Full STEAM Into The Future.” Get ready to witness a vibrant display of artistic talent right in the heart of downtown at the sidewalk surrounding James Weldon Johnson Park.
A Day of Art and Fun
The competition kicks off at 12 p.m. and will run until 5 p.m., giving participating artists a solid six hours to transform the pavement into their masterpiece. With all the chalk they need provided, artists are encouraged to unleash their creativity and express their unique interpretations of the theme. Can you imagine the stunning colors and imaginative designs that will fill the streets?
Get Ready to Vote!
One of the exciting aspects of this competition is the way winners are decided. The finalists will be chosen through a combination of votes from both judges and the public, making it an engaging experience for everyone involved. This year, there are three categories where winners can shine: Main Artists, High School Students, and Middle School Students. But wait, there’s more! Elementary school students are also invited to participate, receiving mentorship from previous winners and having the chance to earn participation prizes.
More Than Just Chalk Art!
This lively event isn’t just about the chalk art. As visitors stroll around enjoying the beautiful creations, they can also indulge in delicious bites from local food trucks. There’s truly something for everyone! Plus, nearby, the MOCA Jacksonville is hosting its Spring Family Day at the same time, which means even more family-friendly activities to enjoy. From Mr. Joe’s Story Time to spectacular performances by the Jacksonville Dance Theatre, family day is set to keep little ones entertained.
Families can also get crafty with foam sculpture making, superhero mask-making, face painting, and even balloon twisting! It’s a fantastic opportunity for kids of all ages to explore their artistic side, whether through chalk or crafts.
A Celebration of Local Talent
Past participants of the Art in the Park event have included notable artists such as Christopher Clark, Elena Øhlander, and Roosevelt Watson III, adding to the competition’s vibrant legacy. The creativity and community spirit have not gone unnoticed; Jacksonville Magazine even celebrated the festival as the “Best Art Festival” of 2023! With such a fantastic reputation, it’s no wonder that artists and spectators alike are eager to join in on the fun.
