Sitting at the heart of this school was Neva, who touched the lives of many and built lasting friendships, all while staying true to her values and passions.
A Life Well-Lived
Born on May 9th, 1953, in Kansas City, Missouri, Neva was the daughter to Bernard and Kordula Wendt. Her journey began at Oak Park High School, where she graduated with the class of 1971. Fueled by a love for learning, she pursued further education at St. John’s Lutheran College in Winfield, Kansas, before moving to Jacksonville, Florida, to complete her associate degree at Jacksonville Junior College.
Musical Endeavors and a Blossoming Love
Neva possessed a remarkable talent for music and was known to play both the accordion and piano. While exploring her college years, she crossed paths with Kenneth E. Vest, a military veteran, and the two began a beautiful journey together. On January 11th, 1975, they tied the knot at King of Kings Lutheran Church, nurturing a loving bond for an incredible 34 years until Kenneth’s passing.
A Heart for Service
Throughout her life, Neva showcased a relentless work ethic, taking on various roles from fast food employee to administrative assistant. Her organizational skills and joyful demeanor left a mark on all her workplaces. However, it was her heart for helping others that truly defined her. During a remarkable 15-year period, Neva and Kenneth opened their hearts and home to 70 foster children, providing care and support to those who needed it most.
Neva’s spirit didn’t stop there. Her commitment and passion for giving back shone brightly during her many years volunteering in various Lutheran churches. With her gifted sewing abilities, she contributed significantly to food and clothing distribution efforts, further demonstrating her love for the community.
An Enthusiastic Supporter
Neva’s dedication extended to Grace Lutheran School, where her energy lit up the gym as she took on the role of official timer and scorekeeper for volleyball and basketball games. Even though she had no prior experience in these sports, her enthusiasm and willingness to help made her a beloved figure among students, staff, and families alike.
Touching Lives at the Good Samaritan Ministry
For the last seven years of her life, Neva devoted herself to the Good Samaritan Ministry Thrift Store and Food Bank in Jacksonville. Her compassionate nature won the hearts of countless visitors as she lovingly assisted individuals and families in need. Neva brought smiles and warmth to those she served, embodying the essence of kindness.
A Passion for Hobbies and Animals
Outside of her volunteer work, Neva found joy in a variety of hobbies, including sewing, crocheting, cooking, baking, and canning an array of foods. A devoted animal lover, she rescued several horses, including a miniature horse named “Squirt”, and adopted two retired greyhounds along with a dog named “Duke”.
A Legacy of Faith
Neva’s strong Christian faith guided her life path while she was baptized, confirmed, and married in the Lutheran Church. A proud member of Grace Lutheran Church and School, her faith played a fundamental role in her community involvement.
Remembering Neva
Neva is survived by her two older brothers, Michael and Curtis, and her younger sister, Kathy. The community shares its heartfelt condolences, especially extended towards her brother-in-law, Reggie Vest, for his unwavering support during this time of mourning. In honor of Neva, memorial contributions are requested to be made to the Good Samaritan Ministry.
A visitation will be held on February 21, 2025,, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Grace Lutheran Church, followed by a funeral service from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. A committal service is scheduled later that day at Hardage-Giddens, Riverside Memorial Park & Funeral Home.
Neva Vest’s unwavering spirit and boundless love for others will always be remembered. Her legacy of kindness and compassion is an enduring gift to all who knew her.
