Cooler Temperatures Hit Jacksonville as Winter Approaches

Jacksonville, Fla. – As November comes to an end, residents in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia are experiencing a notable drop in temperatures, sparking several counties to issue freeze warnings and frost advisories. This blend of cooler air signals an urgent reminder for locals to prepare for a chilly start to December.

Residents Warned to Prepare for Icy Conditions

space heaters, with temperatures predicted to plummet to the 30s and even the 20s in some locales. Kreie emphasized the importance of being proactive in safeguarding homes against the cold. “By being prepared, the accidents don’t happen,” he noted.

Safety First: Tips for Using Space Heaters

With more households relying on space heaters to stay warm, Kreie shared critical safety tips. He warned customers to keep heaters at a safe distance from flammable materials, such as drapes and bedding. The Electrical Safety Foundation highlights that approximately 3,300 house fires each year are linked to improper heater use, leading to 50 fatalities and 270 injuries. They urge individuals to plug space heaters directly into wall outlets to reduce risks associated with using extension cords.

Protecting Plants from the Cold

As residents prep for the temperature drop, plant care also becomes a pressing concern. Kreie explained that many plants start to struggle when the temperature dips below 40 degrees. “The leaves will burn and die. Basically, it’s not a heat burn—it’s a freezer burn. It’s cold,” he added. To help protect outdoor plants, he recommended using frost blankets to shield them from the freezing air. “We have frost blankets trying to keep them elevated but over them to keep that cold air from getting the leaves themselves,” he continued.

For those unsure about the effects of the cold on their plants, Hagan Ace Hardware offers tailored advice. Customers can either call the store or bring in pictures of their greenery for personalized tips on how to protect their plants effectively.

Weekend Recommendations for Residents

This weekend, residents are encouraged to dress in layers to combat the cold. As Jacksonville faces its first real chill of the season, checking on home safety and ensuring that both residents and plants are adequately protected is essential. With the arrival of December, becoming accustomed to the chilly weather means being prepared for what lies ahead.

Conclusion: Embracing the Chill

As Jacksonville and its surrounding areas brace for colder weather, the community is reminded of the importance of preparation. With a few simple precautions, such as ensuring heaters are used safely and protecting plants from frost, residents can enjoy the winter months while staying warm and safe.
