Orlando, the sunny city known for its stunning golf courses, is buzzing with excitement as industry professional Mike Rollins unveils his new book titled Cutline Is King. This insightful read is designed for everyone involved in golf course maintenance, from equipment managers to superintendents.
So, who exactly is Mike Rollins? For those unfamiliar, he spent his childhood immersed in mechanical repair, which sparked his interest in the mechanics behind golf course operations. After pursuing a degree in film and media at the University of Florida, Rollins feared he may never get back into the world of screws and wrenches. However, fate had other plans when he met his wife, Anne, in 2011. Her father runs SIP Grinders, which piqued Rollins’ interest in returning to his mechanical roots.
In 2020, he found himself in a brand new role as the regional sales manager, embracing the opportunity as it allowed him to merge his mechanical skills with his passion for golf. It was at the Michigan GCSA Conference and Trade Show in 2020 where Rollins’ journey as a published author began. After the event, which occurred just before the world was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, he took time to dive deep into understanding the nuts and bolts of equipment management.
During a pivotal trip to the Atlanta Athletic Club, Rollins shadowed certified turf equipment manager John Patterson for four days. This experience really opened his eyes to the critical role equipment managers play in the maintenance of golf courses. As Rollins explains, “A golf course doesn’t exist without the equipment manager or someone to keep that equipment running.” A simple statement, but one that emphasizes the behind-the-scenes work that allows us to enjoy our favorite games on the greens.
Fast forward to December 2021 when Rollins was invited to present at the Michigan Turfgrass Foundation show. Despite having no formal presentation prepared, he was determined to share his knowledge. After spending two weeks compiling information and insights, the first version of Cutline Is King was born, showcasing over 90 slides. The final product has now expanded to over 300 slides, making it a comprehensive guide for fellow golf aficionados.
One aspect that makes Rollins’ book unique is his commitment to sharing knowledge. He recalls, “The information, tips, techniques and experiences were all given to me for free, so it was only fair that my collection of knowledge be shared freely.” This is just a glimpse of his philosophy — when people come together to share knowledge, everyone rises.
The book is available for free download at sipgrinder.com. Since its official launch on November 17, it has already been downloaded close to 1,400 times! Rollins is hopeful about producing a physical copy soon, but for now, the PDF version allows you to soak in invaluable tips all in one spot.
In an industry built on relationships, Rollins makes sure his presentations don’t come off as commercial pitches. His aim is simple: “It’s not about me, it’s about getting information out there and pushing this whole industry forward.” His mission echoes through the heart of Cutline Is King and reminds us of the importance of collaboration and sharing knowledge.
If you’re looking to enhance your understanding of cutting unit tracking in golf course management, Cutline Is King is the book for you. Whether you’re an industry pro or just passionate about golf, there’s something beneficial within its pages.
