Southwest Florida Mourns the Loss of Economic Visionary David Barton

Ocala, Florida – The heart of Southwest Florida is feeling a profound sense of loss as David Barton, a key architect of the region’s economic landscape, has passed away at the age of 89. David fought valiantly against an illness and took his final breaths on February 13 at his beloved farm in Ocala, where he lived a life full of hard work, family, and community spirit.

A Journey from England to Florida

Born in the charming town of Meriden, England, Barton made his way to the sunny shores of Southwest Florida in 1987, bringing along his lovely wife, Margaret. Together for an incredible 60 years of marriage, the couple built a life filled with love and dedication to their family, which proudly includes three children, ten grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Pioneering Economic Development

David Barton was not just a devoted family man; he was also a visionary developer who saw the tremendous potential for growth in Cape Coral. He played an essential role in transforming the North Cape Industrial Park into a thriving 92-acre business hub that now hosts over 100 businesses. His awareness of economic opportunities helped propel the region into a new era of prosperity.

In 1991, Barton co-founded the Horizon Council during a time when many economic development organizations were vying for attention and resources. With his sharp insight and collaborative spirit, he worked closely with other business leaders to create a comprehensive growth plan that captured the admiration of Lee County Commissioners. This groundwork led to the Horizon Council becoming the official advisory board for economic development in the area.

Leadership and Community Service

David’s leadership style was uniquely inclusive. As the first chairman of the Horizon Council, a position he held for four years, he helped forge a strong public-private partnership model that set the stage for sustainable economic growth. His commitment did not stop there: he also served on the board of the Industrial Development Authority for an astonishing 30 years and was a founding member and executive director of the Southwest Regional Manufacturers Association.

In a community where collaboration is key, Barton was recognized for his ability to unite various business organizations under a common vision. Colleagues and friends have fondly remembered his unwavering dedication to promoting unity and growth among those he worked with. His legacy is one of collaboration and mentorship, guiding countless individuals and businesses toward success.

A Lasting Tribute

In honor of David Barton’s remarkable life and contributions, a visitation is scheduled at Fuller Metz Funeral Home in Cape Coral on February 21 from 4 to 6 p.m. This will be followed by a touching Catholic prayer service at 6 p.m. Community members are invited to share their own memories and join in celebrating a man who meant so much to so many.

As his family grieves this tremendous loss, they have requested that instead of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the invaluable work of St. Jude’s. In a poignant tribute, Barton’s final resting place will be in his native England, a fitting return to the roots that shaped him.

David Barton leaves behind an indelible mark on Southwest Florida, not only through his substantial economic contributions but also through a legacy of family and love. The community mourns the passing of a true pioneer and visionary who dedicated his life to bettering the lives of those around him.
