Jacksonville Bids Farewell to Football Legend Derrick Gaffney

In a heartfelt moment for the community, Jacksonville is mourning the loss of former NFL player and cherished Raines High School alumnus, Derrick Gaffney, who passed away on March 17, 2025, at the age of 69. Known for his tremendous talent on the field, Gaffney left a mark not just in the city but in the hearts of many.

From the Gridiron to Glory

Gaffney’s football journey began right here in Jacksonville, where he played at Raines High School. During his high school days, he earned first-team All-City honors as a wide receiver. His time spent under the guidance of coach Jimmie Johnson was particularly memorable, contributing to an undefeated Raines team. It was clear even then that Gaffney had a bright future ahead of him.

After finishing high school, Gaffney took his talents to the next level and was drafted by the New York Jets in the eighth round of the 1978 NFL Draft. His rookie year was nothing short of spectacular, logging 38 receptions, accumulating 691 yards, and scoring three touchdowns. These rookie stats weren’t just good; they showcased the skills and determination that defined his career.

Making Connections and Milestones

Over the course of seven seasons, Gaffney played a total of 100 NFL games, making 69 starts. He was a true athlete known for his smooth moves and quick changes of direction that left defenders scrambling. Throughout his career with the Jets from 1978 to 1984, and during a brief return for two games during the 1987 player strike, he reached the end zone seven times, with 156 catches and 2,613 receiving yards to his name.

One of the highlights of his remarkable career was a legendary 99-yard pass reception from Cris Collinsworth during a game in 1977, a play remembered as the longest in SEC and college football history. This remarkable play solidified Gaffney’s status as one of the greats in football history, leaving fans in awe of his talent and agility.

A Legacy to Remember

Beyond his achievements on the field, Derrick Gaffney was a proud father to Jabar Gaffney, who followed in his father’s footsteps and became a talented NFL wide receiver himself. The Gaffney family has a rich history in athletics, particularly in football at the University of Florida. Notably, the family made their mark by being recognized as the only father-son duo on the Florida Times Union’s 100 Greatest Athletes list, with Jabar at No. 51 and Derrick at No. 69.

Derrick is survived by his children, Jabar and Kara Gaffney, as well as four brothers: Warren, Don, Johnny, and Reginald Gaffney Sr. His legacy continues with Regie Gaffney Jr., his nephew, who proudly now serves as a councilman for Jacksonville’s 8th district.

Remembering Derrick Gaffney

To honor the life of this extraordinary athlete, a viewing will be held on March 28, 2025, at Emanuel Missionary Baptist Church from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The funeral service is scheduled for the following day, March 29, 2025, at 11 a.m., also at the same church. Derrick’s contributions to the sport and the impact he made in the community will always be remembered.

After his time in the NFL, Gaffney transitioned into the business sector with American Express while also dedicating time to coach youth football. His passion for the sport and commitment to nurturing the next generation is a testament to the kind of man he was—dedicated in both his professional and personal life.

As Jacksonville pays tribute to this sports icon, Derrick Gaffney will forever be remembered as more than just a player. He was a role model, a father, and a proud member of the Jacksonville community. The stories of his achievements, charm, and spirit will surely echo in the halls of Raines High School and beyond for years to come.
