The Panthers, currently holding a 2-1 record, are optimistic about securing a win against Jacksonville, looking to maintain their historical advantage. MIAMI – The FIU Women’s Soccer Team is all set to hit the road this Sunday, August 25, for an exciting matchup against Jacksonville University. The game will kick off at 1:00 p.m. at Southern Oaks Stadium, and fans are eagerly anticipating how the Panthers will perform against the Dolphins.
Fresh off a 2-0 victory over their in-state rivals, the Florida Atlantic Owls, the Panthers are riding a wave of confidence. This win marked a significant milestone, as it was the first time FIU has triumphed over Florida Atlantic since 2013, putting an end to a frustrating 11-year winless streak against them. Sophomore goalkeeper Valery Restrepo played a crucial role in securing this victory, earning her first shutout for the Panthers with a stellar performance that included one crucial save.
It was Noemi Paquin who drew first blood against the Owls, netting her first goal of the season just after the 10-minute mark. And to top it off, teammate Montelene Dymond sealed the deal with another goal in the final minutes of the match. This duo of goals not only gave the Panthers a convincing win but also showcased the depth of talent on the roster.
Last season, the Panthers flexed their muscles against Jacksonville, decimating the Dolphins with a resounding 4-0 victory. Senior star Nikole Solis shone brightly in that contest, scoring a remarkable hat-trick. As FIU prepares to face Jacksonville again, coaches and players alike are optimistic about repeating that outcome.
Currently holding a season record of 2 wins and 1 loss after just three matches, the team’s journey began with a hard-fought 2-1 win against FGCU, a powerhouse they hadn’t bested since 2010. In that match, first-year sensation Antonella Solari opened up scoring with her debut goal, assisted by fellow newcomer Rebecca Baldelomar. The squad’s only setback this season came against the University of Oklahoma, where FIU fell short with a narrow 2-1 defeat.
On the other hand, Jacksonville University’s women’s soccer team is looking for their first win of the season after dropping their opening two games, with a narrow 1-0 loss to Boston College followed by a larger defeat against USF, where they lost 5-1. As per the recent poll, the Dolphins are ranked 11 out of 12 in the 2024 ASUN Preseason Poll, which paints a picture of a challenging season ahead for them.
Jacksonville’s only goal so far this season came from defender Logan Gonzales, marking a bright spot in an otherwise tumultuous start. Jacksonville finished their last season with a challenging record of 3-11-4, which included a disheartening 1-8-2 in conference play.
FIU has had a strong history against Jacksonville, winning five of their last six encounters. The Panthers hold a slight advantage with a 5-4 record in their matchups since 2003, and the team hopes to extend that winning streak this Sunday.
With nine seasoned seniors returning this season, including standout players like Noemi Paquin and Reagan Bridges, fresh talent, and a revitalized spirit, the Panthers are aiming high as they step onto the field. Fans are encouraged to keep up with the latest updates, scores, and highlights by following the FIU Women’s Soccer team on social media platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.
