This Saturday, Jacksonville is set to turn up the excitement as it welcomes around 15,000 runners to the 48th Annual Gate River Run. This highly anticipated event is not just any race; it holds the title of the largest 15K in the country and doubles as the national championship for 15K runners. If you have been counting down the days, the wait is almost over!
Even though registration for the main 15K race sold out just last Thursday, there are still plenty of activities planned for the day! Participants can look forward to the 5K for charity, the Junior River Run, the Brooks Challenge Mile, and the ever-popular Diaper Dash. There truly is something for everyone, whether you are a seasoned runner or just want to cheer on your family and friends!
Runners should gather on Gator Bowl Boulevard for the big 15K race kick-off, which launches at 8 a.m. sharp. After an exhilarating journey over the famous Hart Bridge—nicknamed “The Green Monster” by those in the know—you’ll be in for a treat as the finish line awaits at the base of the bridge. The course takes you down Bay Street, across the Main Street Bridge, through the charming San Marco area, and then back via Hendricks Avenue. The final mile, which includes the daunting Hart Bridge, will truly put runners to the test!
The Runner’s Expo kicked off on Thursday, buzzing with excitement as thousands of runners collected their race packets. For those out-of-town participants, the expo remains open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, and on Saturday morning from 6:30 a.m. until the race begins. Local runners, don’t forget—race packets must be picked up by Friday. Be sure to arrive early, as parking is limited.
The available parking at EverBank Stadium is around 8,000 spots, so it’s wise to carpool or plan for a leisurely stroll of about 10 minutes to the race’s starting area. Be sure to know your race bib number when picking up your packet to make the process as smooth as possible.
Weather-wise, it looks favorable, with temperatures expected to be in the low 50s and a gentle westerly breeze as racers line up. The day’s festivities kick off bright and early at 7:55 a.m. for the elite women, with elite men off at 8 a.m., followed by subsequent waves starting at 8:05 a.m., 8:10 a.m., and 8:15 a.m. It’s sure to be an electrifying atmosphere as runners make their way through the course.
And for those who have their eyes set on the prize, an additional $5,000 in prize money will be awarded to the first person that crosses the finish line, whether male or female. No pressure, right?
After racing to the finish, all participants will receive a medal commemorating their achievement. Plus, there’ll be plenty of festivities at Metropolitan Park adjacent to the finish line, including free food and drinks provided by Publix, a live band, and activities for kids. The awards ceremony will also take place, where all the glory will be celebrated!
Keep in mind that this race course prohibits bicycles and dogs, ensuring a smooth experience for all. With water stations and bathrooms available throughout the course, runners can stay hydrated and comfortable.
So, lace up those running shoes, get ready to wave goodbye to worries, and gear up for an unforgettable day in Jacksonville. Whether you are running or cheering from the sidelines, the Gate River Run promises to be a heart-pounding, exhilarating experience!
