With ties to local political figures and a vibrant past filled with music, this unique establishment has become a beloved part of the city’s history. Visitors can enjoy its eclectic decor, beautiful gardens, and a glimpse into Jacksonville’s rich cultural heritage.

Welcome to Jacksonville: A Tale of The Handy Dandy!

Just when you think you’ve heard every story in Jacksonville, something like the history of the Handy Dandy pops up, and you can’t help but be fascinated! Nestled at the intersection of Herschel and James streets in the Riverside area, this building has a past as rich as a slice of grandma’s pie.

The Humble Beginnings

The Handy Dandy wasn’t always the charming bed and breakfast it is today. Way back in 1925, it started its life as Whiddon’s Cash Store and the Hiram Jones Meats. Picture this: customers could snag a Whiddon’s coupon worth a quarter for just a nickel! That’s what you call a deal! Over the years, the store was owned by the prominent Middle Eastern families, the Nasrallahs and Hazouris. Their legacy is felt in every corner, especially since two members of these families had notable political careers—one being Tommy Hazouri, who became mayor in 1987, and his cousin Donna Deegan, who broke barriers as Jacksonville’s first female mayor in 2023.

Musical Hues of the 1960s

The 🥁 vibes of the late sixties are said to still echo through the walls of this building. While formal records state that the upstairs was vacant, local legends say it was alive with the sounds of hippie musicians. One resident, Linda Miller, fondly remembers her vibrant life above the Handy Dandy from February to June 1968, where laughter, music, and late-night gatherings filled the space. Interestingly, the talented musician Berry Oakley from the Allman Brothers Band also found temporary digs there during this colorful era. Imagine those walls, once adorned with acid-inspired drawings, bursting with creativity and tune!

Rescue and Renovation

Fast forward to 1995, when Richard Ceriello purchased the property for a mere $25,000. The building had seen better days, and Ceriello, recognizing its potential, rolled up his sleeves to tackle the necessary renovations while pouring in an estimated $125,000 to $135,000. Sadly, shortly after acquiring it, Ceriello’s partner, Tony O’Connor, passed away from AIDS. Despite the challenges, Ceriello’s dedication paid off, and the Handy Dandy was transformed over an impressive 11-year period into a magical getaway.

From Store to Bed & Breakfast

By 2016, the Handy Dandy welcomed its new life as the 1910 General Store B&B, drawing in guests from all over the globe, including visitors from Great Britain, Thailand, and South Africa. The charming B&B can accommodate up to six guests in its four cozy bedrooms which operate at an impressive occupancy rate of 85 to 100%. One must-see feature is the hidden door that leads to a charming staircase, allowing guests to uncover the building’s secrets while enjoying its eclectic decor with historical touches and Asian antiques that send you back in time.

A Garden of Southern Charm

Ceriello had a vision of creating a garden-like outdoor area filled with Southern charm. The towering trees, beautiful landscaping, and a soothing fountain create a peaceful oasis that is hard to resist. Don’t forget—this incredible spot also caught the eye of filmmakers; a short film titled “Ortega River Rats” was filmed right on the property, celebrating its historical roots.

Fame and Future

The Handy Dandy has become a beloved part of Jacksonville’s history, and it’s easy to see why! Besides the stories of past musicians and political ties, it’s also played host to notable guests, including Princess Aliyah Pandolfi of Kashmir in March 2017. This quirky and revitalized corner store is more than just a place to stay; it’s a piece of history that keeps Jacksonville’s vibrant spirit alive!

So, if you’re ever in the beautiful streets of Jacksonville, take a moment to visit the Handy Dandy, where history, music, and charming hospitality await! You never know what stories it might whisper to you.
