His family, friends, and many others cherished him for his compassion and lifelong learning. Jim’s passing on April 12, 2025, leaves a void but also a legacy of love and service that will not be forgotten.
Jacksonville Beach, Florida – We come together today in reverence as we remember a truly remarkable individual, James C. Smith, affectionately known to many as Jim, and to his grandchildren, he was simply Jimsy. Jim’s journey came to a close on April 12, 2025, but his spirit will continue to resonate through the lives he touched.
Born in beautiful Savannah, Georgia on September 9, 1933, Jim was the beloved son of Evelyn Worsham Smith and William Smith. As the second child in his family, following his sister Mary Lou, Jim was destined to leave a mark not just in his immediate family but beyond. His early years in Savannah shaped the compassionate and insightful man he became.
Jim graduated with pride from Lee High School in Jacksonville, Florida. Post high school, he made a bold choice to serve his country by joining the U.S. Army. This decision illustrated his commitment to duty and honor, traits he carried with him throughout his life.
After his service, Jim took his educational journey to new heights at the University of Florida, completing his degree in an impressive span of three years! It was here that he became a proud member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, fostering lifelong friendships and unforgettable memories.
Following his university days, Jim set his sights on Washington, D.C., where he attended George Washington University Law School. His journey took an exciting turn during his third year when he was approached by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). While this could have led to a thrilling career, Jim ultimately embarked on a different path, one that would see him serve with honor for over 25 years.
Throughout his time with the CIA, Jim was fortunate to travel around the globe. His adventures took him to Europe, the Far East, and the Middle East. Notably, he often was accompanied by his family, sharing the experience and creating a treasure chest of memories along the way.
Even after retiring, Jim never stopped learning. He was an avid reader, always seeking to broaden his horizons. His passion for knowledge was matched only by his beloved humor and compassion. He had a way of connecting with people, making him well-respected and cherished by numerous friends.
Jim leaves behind a rich legacy as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was married to his beloved wife, Barbara, for nearly 64 years. Together, they built a strong and loving family that includes sons Steven (with Kelly) and Kevin (with Lesley), as well as daughter Nikki Smith. The family Gene continues with grandchildren such as Porcia (with Chris), Adalia, Schuyler Smith, Jordan Cook, Caden Smith, and Landon Smith. They were blessed with great-grandchildren, including Leo, Kalani, and Killian Adalia.
Jim also cherished his sister, Jeanette Steiner, and held dear the bonds with his niece, Cynthia Baker, and nephew, Chris Parkinson.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that tributes be made to any animal rescue of choice. While there will be no formal service per Jim’s wishes, his family invites everyone to raise a glass in his memory, celebrating the wonderful journey he has taken as he embarks on his next adventure.
Let us honor Jim C. Smith, a man whose life was marked by service, love, and an endless thirst for knowledge. He will be dearly missed but fondly remembered.
