As the sunny skies of Southwest Florida witness a shift in the golfing landscape, traditional outdoor golf driving ranges are becoming increasingly rare. With this change, a new trend is emerging: indoor golf simulators. One establishment that has embraced this trend wholeheartedly is The Cave, a fresh venue located at 9250 Corkscrew Road, Suite 13, Estero.
The Cave was opened on February 4 by Karen Nicoletti, an LPGA professional golfer, and her husband, Brad Swearingen, who once made his living as a professional golf caddy. They recognized a growing need among golf enthusiasts for a more affordable and accessible way to enjoy the game. According to Nicoletti, “The pandemic was great for the game of golf.” She noted that public golf courses are enjoying a surge in popularity, but at the same time, she pointed out that “it’s tough for the average person to be able to afford the sport.”
At The Cave, visitors can experience golf without breaking the bank. Renting a simulator for an hour costs around $50 and can accommodate up to six players. This is a steal compared to the costs associated with traditional courses, where playing at prestigious locations like Pebble Beach can set you back nearly $800.
With its welcoming atmosphere, The Cave aims to eliminate the intimidation factor often found in golfing. Nicoletti emphasized, “Coming here, you don’t have to worry about being intimidated.” Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced golfer, The Cave is designed for everyone to enjoy themselves. They even offer free women’s golf clinics on Mondays and have discounts available for veterans, police, firefighters, emergency medical services, and teachers.
Brad Swearingen’s journey to opening The Cave started with a back injury that halted his caddying career. While recovering, he found himself needing a new direction. “He needed a Plan B,” Nicoletti shared. “He opened up The Cave. The Man Cave. He pretty much built it with his own two hands.” This hands-on approach reflects the owner’s passion and commitment to the sport.
The couple has plans to expand The Cave further, with the addition of two indoor pickleball courts later in the year. For now, they’re drawing in crowds with golf simulators that allow users to play simulated rounds on famous courses or practice tricky shots from sand traps and putting greens.
Swearingen demonstrated the thrill of hitting a simulated shot into the screen. “It might take a little getting used to, maybe a hole or two…” he admitted. “But it’s so accurate and so realistic that you soon think you’re really out on the golf course.” The technology is designed to mimic real-life golfing as closely as possible, making it an exciting new way to tee off.
The demand for indoor golf simulators seems to be rising, especially as local outdoor ranges are disappearing. Notably, one driving range off Alico Road has been transformed into an Amazon distribution warehouse, and another on Daniels Parkway is now a Whole Foods Market. This trend highlights the need for innovative golf experiences, like those being offered at The Cave.
As golfers in Southwest Florida look for alternatives to traditional driving ranges, indoor golf simulators like The Cave are rising to the occasion. With affordable prices, a welcoming atmosphere, and advanced golfing technology, it seems like this trending venue is here to stay. So grab your friends and get ready to swing; The Cave is the new place to perfect your golf game!
