A frost-covered scene in Jacksonville capturing the unexpected chill this April.
Jacksonville experienced a surprising cold snap this April, with temperatures plunging to 28°F on April 4, 2025. This marked the city’s eighth freeze of the season, prompting a Cold Weather Advisory from the National Weather Service. As residents prepared for another chilly week, forecasts indicated possible mixed precipitation, including ice accumulations. Jacksonville officials established warming centers to support the community during this unexpected cold spell, while discussions about potential school closures are ongoing. Stay informed and take precautions during these winter-like conditions!
Jacksonville is getting an unexpected taste of winter this April! The city recorded its eighth freeze of the season on April 4, 2025, as temperatures fell to a chilly 28°F in the early morning hours. The day didn’t warm up much, with afternoon highs only reaching into the low 50s. This marked the coldest afternoon Jacksonville has seen since January 21, 2024, leaving many residents clutching their warm jackets and blankets.
The National Weather Service has stepped in, issuing a Cold Weather Advisory for Northeast Florida. When wind chills drop to between 16 and 25 degrees, these advisories come into play. For even colder situations, Extreme Cold Warnings are issued if temperatures dip below 10 degrees in Georgia or 15 degrees here in Northeast Florida. Interestingly, this advisory marks the first use of the NWS’s simplified winter weather alert system, implemented back in October 2024, making it easier for residents to stay informed.
On April 4, instead of a Cold Weather Advisory, a Freeze Warning was issued, thanks to lighter winds. However, residents should brace themselves as forecasts indicate that the Cold Weather Advisory may return on April 5 with stronger winds expected overnight. It’s a good time to dig out the winter gear again!
With several freezes likely in the week ahead, it’s crucial for residents to take precautions. Protect your plants, make sure your pipes are insulated, and don’t forget about your furry friends. Remember, they shouldn’t be left outside in these chilly temperatures!
In addition to the cold weather, Tampa Bay news has pointed out that winter storm warnings are expanding along the coast due to predictions of mixed precipitation and possible ice accumulations. The Winter Storm Warning for most of the First Coast will be in effect until 1 PM on April 5, with forecasts expecting total snow and sleet accumulations of up to one inch. Ice accumulations could be anywhere from one-tenth to one-quarter of an inch, which could complicate matters for commuters.
Traveling during this time may be risky! Anticipate treacherous travel conditions as slick roads, especially on bridges and overpasses, could pose serious hazards. With ice accumulating, there’s also a real chance of power outages. Heavy rain combined with cold air creates a perfect storm for outages, so stay alert!
To help residents cope with the cold, Jacksonville has set up warming centers that will be operational through the morning of April 5. And in a proactive move, the governor has declared a state of emergency due to the hazardous conditions. The activation of the Florida National Guard is also in place to assist response efforts as needed.
Local school districts are currently mulling over the prospect of closures. However, as of now, no official announcements have been made regarding shutdowns in the Jacksonville area. Parents will need to keep a close watch as the weather conditions evolve—staying informed is key!
So, while we’re used to warmer weather this time of year, Jacksonville is reminding us that it’s not quite time to pack up our winter gear. Stay warm, safe, and hearty, folks!
