Jacksonville Community Bids Farewell to Beloved Family Man and Air National Guard Master Sergeant Kenneth Robert McEwen

Jacksonville is feeling a palpable sense of loss as it remembers one of its cherished residents, Kenneth Robert McEwen, who passed away on January 18th at the age of 81. This vibrant and loving figure was not just a dedicated family man but also a proud member of the Air National Guard, leaving behind a legacy that will be long remembered.

Born on May 27, 1943, in Atlanta, Georgia, Ken was the son of Ira Von and Iona Friddle McEwen. He had a knack for leadership from an early age, as he was the starting quarterback during his high school days at Decatur High School. After high school, Jacksonville became his new home where he attended Jacksonville University and earned a business degree, laying the groundwork for a fulfilling career.

Initially, Ken found his footing in the banking industry but soon answered the call of duty by joining the Air Force Reserves. His commitment did not stop there; he transitioned to a full-time role in the contracting office for the Florida Air National Guard and bravely served until his retirement in 2002, advancing to the rank of Master Sergeant. This was a testament to his dedication, discipline, and strong work ethic—all attributes that shaped his life and the lives of those around him.

In September 1964, he married the love of his life, Charlene McEwen. Together, they laid down roots in Jacksonville, where they enjoyed a deep and loving relationship for over 60 years. Their family flourished with four wonderful children: John (born in 1969), David (born in 1970), Deborah (born in 1973), and Brian (born in 1979). Ken was more than just their father; he was a mentor, a role model, and a fatherly figure who wore many hats—including that of a baseball coach!

Outside of family, Ken had passions that brightened his life. He loved hitting the golf course, supporting basketball at Jacksonville University, cheering for Florida Gator football, and rooting for the Jacksonville Jaguars. In his early retirement years, he took on the delightful role as head of parking security at the Jaguars’ stadium, where he shared his joy for football with the community.

Travel was another of Ken’s joys, as he and his family made numerous trips to breathtaking locations such as California, the desert southwest, and even enchanting places in Italy and Germany. Unfortunately, the open roads didn’t always travel as one would hope, as Ken suffered a loss when his son Brian passed away in 2003. This part of his journey undoubtedly shaped Ken into the compassionate person that his family came to admire and love.

Today, his wife Charlene and three children, John, David, and Deborah, hold fond memories of him close to their hearts. They also express gratitude towards Jim Yackey for his profound support and kindness during Ken’s final days. The Brierwood community, which the McEwen family has called home since 1984, is deeply appreciated, as it played a significant role in shaping Ken’s life.

A celebration of Ken’s life is scheduled for January 24, 2025, at 1 PM at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Chapel in Jacksonville, where Pastor Bob Hovey will lead the services. It promises to be a heartfelt gathering to reminisce, share stories, and honor a remarkable man who touched so many lives.

As Jacksonville turns the page on this chapter, the community reflects on the indelible mark left by Kenneth Robert McEwen—a beloved husband, father, and friend. His spirit, dedication, and love will continue to inspire all who knew him.
