Jacksonville, Fla. — A new health care initiative aimed at supporting uninsured individuals has been launched in the city. On Wednesday, health care professionals gathered at JASMYN to provide free health care screenings to those without insurance, as part of the city’s initiative called Healthlink Jax. This program aims to offer free, round-the-clock virtual health care services.
Health care professionals highlight a significant issue facing many uninsured citizens: the difficult choice between seeking medical care and the burden of financial costs. According to AmeriPro EMT Larry Saintval, many individuals never visit a doctor simply because they cannot afford it. “Some people, they never see a doctor because they can’t afford it,” he stated.
Despite hesitation regarding the term “free,” nurses and paramedics involved in the initiative are actively working to change perceptions. Nurse Lorna Brown remarked, “A lot of times when you say ‘free,’ they’re like, ‘Oh no, that’s not free.’ I’m like, ‘No, it’s free! Like, it’s free medical care.'” This reassurance aims to encourage participation in health screenings that could potentially save lives.
Health screenings conducted through Healthlink Jax are critical for identifying health issues that residents may have been postponing due to financial constraints. Brown mentioned a patient who required open heart surgery but also had cancer, waiting for the surgery before further scans could be conducted. Through Healthlink Jax, such patients can access necessary resources and referrals to clinics, easing their financial burdens.
The city attributes its success in reducing the number of uninsured individuals to the Get Covered Jax campaign, which has reportedly decreased the uninsured rate in Duval County by 34%. Yet, approximately 90,000 people in the county remain uninsured, making initiatives like Healthlink Jax essential. The Census Bureau indicates that uninsured individuals often rely on emergency rooms for preventable care, leading to increased costs for both patients and hospitals.
In just two months since its inception, Telescope Health, part of Healthlink Jax, has claimed that the program has saved about $500,000 in emergency room visits. Nurse Brown expressed the satisfaction of providing health care at no cost, stating, “It’s beautiful to be able to give them that life, give them that gift of health for no cost.”
Free health care screenings will continue to be offered weekly. Residents can take advantage of these opportunities at Daily Manna, located at 2669 Edison Ave., in Jacksonville, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Thursdays. For more information about the Healthlink Jax program, residents are encouraged to call 904-925-CARE (2273).
This initiative represents a significant step in addressing health care accessibility for uninsured individuals in Jacksonville. By providing essential health screenings and resources, Healthlink Jax aims to improve community well-being and reduce the financial burden placed on the health care system.
