Jacksonville, Fla. — The annual Gingerbread Extravaganza has kicked off its festive season, bringing an edible wonderland to the historical St. Andrews Church. This beloved holiday art display showcases exquisite gingerbread creations from bakers of all ages, making its debut on Saturday. Participants from the First Coast region, including Folkston, Georgia and Ormond Beach, have crafted various exhibits in hopes of winning recognition in their respective categories.
This year’s display features an impressive array of gingerbread houses and mansions, many crafted as life-sized replicas of well-known locations across the First Coast. Each exhibit must meet the requirement of being at least 85% edible, with the option to incorporate non-edible elements such as birdseed or dog biscuits. The judging panel consists of two architects alongside an interior designer who will determine the winners in various categories.
The Gingerbread Extravaganza is open to the public now through December 28, with visiting hours from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Guests can stroll through this festive cookie-made village and appreciate not only the gingerbread displays but also 26 beautifully decorated trees and 10 wreaths. A special holiday shop adds to the festivities, providing visitors with unique seasonal items.
Among the 26 trees, three stand out for their significance. One tree is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), while another honors Jacksonville’s military heritage. The third tree, designed by the Southern Genealogist’s Exchange Society, highlights the area’s rich historical lineage through genealogy.
The Gingerbread Extravaganza serves as the largest fundraiser for the Jacksonville historic center. For over 22 years, this month-long display has provided critical funding for various programs that benefit the community long after the holiday season concludes.
This year introduces an exciting addition: evening candlelight displays scheduled for December 12 and December 17. These events are tailored for adults and include two drinks with each ticket purchase. Regular admission pricing is $10 for adults and $5 for children, offering an affordable way for families to enjoy this festive atmosphere.
Additionally, the Merrill House Museum will be open for 30-minute guided tours throughout the day, giving guests a chance to learn more about the history and significance of the location as well as the artistry behind the gingerbread creations.
