Jacksonville Golf Community Mourns Beloved Member Billy Drake

It’s a bittersweet moment for the Jacksonville golf community as they come to terms with the loss of a true friend and sportsman, William Alvin Drake, better known as Billy. He passed away peacefully on March 30, 2025, at the age of 82, leaving behind a rich legacy of love and camaraderie.

A Life Well-Lived

Billy was born on June 4, 1942, in Minnesota. As the third oldest among his siblings, he was a vital part of a close-knit family. His educational journey took him to Cretin High School in St. Paul, where he developed a passion for sports that would follow him throughout his life.

In June 1966, he tied the knot with Jane Walker, a partnership that lasted an incredible 59 years. The couple briefly resided in Pennsylvania before making their final move to Florida in 1978, where Billy truly left his mark in the Jacksonville community.

Committed to Golf

For an astonishing 47 years, Billy worked at the Hyde Park Golf Club. He wore many hats there as both an employee and a devoted patron. To him, the golf club wasn’t just a workplace; it was a second home filled with laughter, unforgettable moments, and friendships that spanned generations. His dedication to the sport was evident in his involvement with the Hyde Park Men’s Association and the Jacksonville Area Golf Association (JAGA).

But Billy’s love for sports didn’t stop at golf. He spent many years umpiring high-school baseball and recreational softball across North Florida. His passion for sports brought communities together, and he became a beloved figure among players and fans alike.

Community Impact

Billy’s kindness and positivity made a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was admired not only for his sportsmanship but also for his unwavering friendliness and warm smile. It’s no wonder that Billy was a cherished member of the Jacksonville community, inspiring those around him to be the best versions of themselves.

Family and Friends

Billy is survived by his loving wife, Jane, their three children: Daniel (Jennifer), Ann (Richard), and James (Natasha). The family tree continues to grow with seven grandchildren: Marcus Almond, Matthew Drake, Nathan Almond, Natalie Drake, Olivia Drake, Gabriel Drake, and Joshua Drake. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his immediate family, Billy is also survived by his siblings, including Joan, Dan, Ellen, Claudia, Chris, John, and Michele. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace and AnnaMarie Drake, along with brothers Thomas Drake and Brett Behnke, and sister Virginia Casey.

A Lasting Legacy

The Jacksonville golf community will gather to remember a life full of warmth and generosity. A memorial service is set to take place on April 9 at 1 p.m. at Restoration Church, located at 1677 Southside Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32216. It’s a chance for friends and family to come together, to reminisce and celebrate everything Billy stood for.

In honor of his memory, the family has requested donations to be made in Billy’s name to the Jacksonville Area Golf Association (JAGA) Charitable Trust. Contributions can be sent to 130 Corridor Rd, Unit 525, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32004. This is a beautiful way for Billy’s spirit to continue impacting the lives of others in the golfing world he cherished so dearly.

Farewell, Billy Drake. Your spirit will continue to shine within the hearts of the countless people you touched throughout your remarkable life.
