Ribault vs. Raines: A Classic Showdown!
Mark your calendars for March 6, as Ribault and Raines High Schools are gearing up to face off in the Annual High School Heritage Classic at the stunning VyStar Ballpark, home of the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp! The competition kicks off at 7 p.m. and promises to be an electrifying match-up.
This year, the game adds a special twist by honoring the rich history of the Jacksonville Red Caps of the Negro Leagues. It’s a wonderful way to celebrate our heritage and appreciate the sacrifices that athletes have made in the past. The excitement is palpable, and we can’t wait to see the stands packed with cheering fans!
A Special Moment in Middleburg
Before we dive back into the details of the upcoming game, let’s take a moment to talk about a memorable event from last week. In a thrilling showdown, Middleburg’s Emma Ward hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning against Baldwin, which led her team to a nail-biting victory with a score of 10-7. This incredible home run wasn’t just a game-winner; it marked Emma’s very first career varsity hit! Talk about a dream come true!
Last season, Middleburg clinched the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 5A championship, while Baldwin has been dominating, reaching the final four of the state tournament for three consecutive years. Baldwin initially led the game, scoring 5-1 thanks to a spectacular home run by Jazmine Ramos-Merced but ultimately fell short. What a game!
Wrestling Season Wrapping Up
In the girls’ division, Trinity Wanamaker made headlines by winning the Region 1 title at 120 pounds. Meanwhile, Oakleaf’s Kailani Barrientos made quick work of her competition by securing victory in just 23 seconds in the 135-pound category of Region 1. Go, girls!
Softball Season Is Just Heating Up
Switching gears to softball, Baker County is making waves as they were ranked first in the Northeast Florida schools in the Times-Union’s softball preseason fan poll for the upcoming 2025 season. The Wildcats made it all the way to the FHSAA championship game last year, boasting an impressive start to the current season with an unbeaten record of 2-0-1.
Leading the charge is Chloe Woods, who has captured attention as the best pitcher in Northeast Florida. With a record of 11-4, a stellar 1.20 ERA, and 133 strikeouts, she’s been a cornerstone for her team. Plus, she’s already committed to playing softball at Santa Fe College—an incredible achievement for her!
Additionally, let’s not forget Yulee’s Ava Martyn, who was recognized as the best batter in Northeast Florida. Last season, she batted .283 while racking up six doubles, two homers, 18 walks, and 12 stolen bases in just 22 games! Ava has signed with Edward Waters College to continue her batting prowess on the collegiate level.
Jacksonville, there’s so much to be excited about in our local schools. Let’s keep showing up and supporting our athletes, cheering every step of the way as they continue to break records and make memories!
