The crash was initiated by a stolen pickup truck driving the wrong way, which struck the motorcyclist. Subsequently, a 2021 Acura sedan collided with the motorcyclist, causing fatal injuries. The driver of the stolen truck attempted to evade police but remains at large. Florida Highway Patrol is urging witnesses to step forward while the community mourns the loss.
Jacksonville, a city that often enjoys sunny skies and palm trees lining its streets, was shaken on February 5, 2025, when a tragic incident unfolded on the busy interstate. Around 4:38 PM, a dramatic crash involving three vehicles turned an ordinary day into a scene of chaos and sorrow.
The crash was caused by a driver in a stolen dark green Chevrolet pickup truck from 2001, who was bizarrely driving the wrong way on northbound I-295. At the heart of the incident was a 66-year-old motorcyclist from Jacksonville. His ride ended abruptly when the stolen truck struck him, sending him flying onto the highway.
To further complicate matters, a white 2021 Acura sedan, driven by a 33-year-old man from Glen Saint Mary, collided with the motorcyclist as he lay injured on the road. The end result was devastating; the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. At this time, his identity has not been made public.
The driver of the Acura, along with his female passenger, also 33 years old, suffered minor injuries and were immediately treated at a local hospital. Thankfully, they are expected to recover, but the haunting memory of the accident will stick with them for some time.
As if the situation wasn’t already shocking enough, the driver of the stolen truck didn’t just sit idly after the crash. Attempting to evade arrest, he tried to steal another vehicle but was unsuccessful. In a move straight out of a movie, he decided to climb onto the exterior of a passing semi-truck to escape the chaos he had just created.
Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is currently on the lookout for the suspect, who is described as a short Black man with short dreadlocks gathered into a bun. He was last seen wearing black shorts, and witnesses believe he may have removed his black shirt during the wild escape.
The ramifications of the crash were felt across the highway, as all northbound lanes of I-295 were shut down for at least six hours. The length of the shutdown is a stark reminder of just how serious the situation was. FHP has mentioned that the suspect might have sustained injuries from the crash or the ensuing altercation. So if you spot someone matching that description who appears hurt, it’s worth taking note.
Onlookers reported that several brave individuals rushed to assist the injured motorcyclist, showcasing the compassion that can still shine through dire circumstances. Despite the chaos, the community’s willingness to help highlighted the good in people even on a day marked by such tragedy.
FHP Master Sgt. Dylan Bryan has indicated that this crash is likely to be an event that first responders will remember for years to come, given its severe nature. The emotional toll of such incidents resonates with everyone involved—witnesses, responders, and especially the families of those affected.
In light of these events, FHP is urging anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the suspect to step forward. If you know something, don’t keep it to yourself. You can reach out to them by dialing *FHP (*347) or contacting First Coast Crime Stoppers. The community is coming together during this difficult time, aiming for justice in what has become a nightmare on the road.
As Jacksonville reflects on this tragic incident, the hope is that it serves as a reminder of the fragile nature of life and the importance of road safety in our bustling city. Let’s continue to support one another through these challenging times.
