Jacksonville, Fla. — Thousands gathered along the downtown shores of the St. Johns River on Saturday for the annual Jacksonville Light Boat Parade. This celebrated event, now in its 40th year, showcased beautifully decorated boats and provided families with an enchanting start to the Christmas season.
The parade began just after sunset, allowing the twinkling lights on the boats to shine brightly against the darkening sky. Participants included both seasoned boaters and newcomers, eager to join the festivities. Among them was Jayden Asper, who was participating for the first time. “We just got it a few weeks ago and we’re still learning all about it,” Asper shared while preparing his sailboat for the parade.
Asper mentioned that entering the parade was the best way to familiarize himself with his new boat. “Make sure we don’t slack off on getting our boat put together and give us kind of a deadline to make sure everything is working as expected,” he said. He had to master operating the boat and stringing lights to compete for prizes. Asper humorously asserted, “The top two sailboats win awards, and as far as I know, there are two sailboats ever, so we might be guaranteed a prize.”
The parade attracted a substantial audience, with some enthusiastic critics among them. Joe Zeman, who brought his toddler son, remarked about the selective clapping from young Clyde. “He’s only clapped for one or two, so I guess those are the favorites.” Meanwhile, young Eva Trinnear quickly identified her favorite, saying, “I liked the one where the gingerbread men were moving,” as she enjoyed a better view from her relative’s shoulders.
The Light Boat Parade also provided an opportunity for families to start new Christmas traditions. Robert Trinnear stopped by after a family dinner, stating, “I didn’t expect it to be as crowded as it was.” Others reflected on how the event might shape their future celebrations. Zeman said, “I think we’re going to spend it at the house as a family and start our own traditions. We’re still pretty new to the game.”
After completing the parade route, Asper was pleasantly surprised to learn that he had won first prize in the sailboat division. “That’s a great way to start my Christmas season and enjoy time with the new boat altogether,” he beamed.
With a mix of laughter, beautiful lights, and a sense of community, the Jacksonville Light Boat Parade successfully brought families together, making memories that will surely last for years to come. As the tradition continues, both participants and spectators look forward to what next year’s event will bring.
