Jacksonville Reveals Plans for Revamped Metropolitan Park Inspired by Gullah Geechee Culture

"Exciting Revitalization Plans for Metropolitan Park in Jacksonville"

Jacksonville Unveils New Design for Metropolitan Park

Jacksonville, Fla. – The city recently held an open house to present the new concept design for Metropolitan Park. This event marked the last opportunity for the public to voice their opinions before the final design is expected to be released in winter 2025. The revitalization plan aims to breathe new life into the park, which is situated next to EverBank Stadium along the scenic river walk.

A Tribute to Gullah Geechee Culture

The design is heavily influenced by the traditional art of basket weaving from the Gullah Geechee culture, honoring the descendants of this heritage who reside in the nearby Out East neighborhood. The proposed layout aims to intertwine three distinct park experiences: the riverfront, a central lawn, and Bay Street.

Key Features of the New Design

Several exciting additions are being considered in the park’s design:

  • The Parking Grove: This area will introduce 60 new parking spots alongside Bay Street, seamlessly integrated with a grove of trees. It is designed to accommodate food trucks and vendors, providing shade during events such as tailgates.
  • Tailgate Plaza: This section will feature a picnic pavilion, a performance pavilion, and a water play area. It will also introduce ‘The Ramble’, featuring garden rooms and hillside play areas for families and visitors.
  • Performance Lawn: Acknowledging Metropolitan Park’s role as a central venue for festivals like the Jacksonville Jazz Fest, this performance area will be moved north to improve access from Bay Street.
  • Discovery Green: Nestled next to the Performance Lawn near WJCT, this small lawn will offer play features and picnic spots, making it a family-friendly area.
  • Braided Riverwalk: Expected to provide visitors with a unique experience, this feature includes an extended dock and a canopy walk, allowing guests to stroll through the treetops.

Part of a Bigger Vision

This revitalization effort is a key component of the broader Jacksonville Riverfront vision, which also includes plans for a new stadium, a Jaguars headquarters, and a Four Seasons Hotel. The city is taking significant steps to enhance public spaces and promote community engagement.

Community Engagement Encouraged

As the design process moves forward, the city encourages residents to share their thoughts on the proposed features. Feedback from the community plays a crucial role in shaping a park that best serves the needs and desires of Jacksonville’s diverse population.

Next Steps in the Development

With the timeline for the final design set for early 2025, the city is keen to incorporate public feedback into the upcoming revisions. The community’s input will help ensure that the revitalized Metropolitan Park will be a vibrant and welcoming space for all.

As Jacksonville moves forward with this ambitious project, the excitement surrounding the park’s potential is palpable. This revitalization aims not only to enhance recreational opportunities but also to honor and celebrate the city’s rich cultural heritage.
