Sheriff engaging with residents in a community walk for safety

News Summary

In Jacksonville’s Cedar Hills neighborhood, Sheriff T.K. Waters, alongside local officers, engaged with residents to address safety concerns. Community member Tasha Vettraino creatively appealed for speed bumps to protect children playing outside. With over 100 traffic citations already issued, residents express hope for improved safety measures. Sheriff Waters emphasized the need for open communication and community engagement in addressing traffic violations and other local issues, promising ongoing efforts to foster a safer environment.

Jacksonville Steps Up for Neighborhood Safety

In the bustling city of Jacksonville, a recent community initiative is turning heads and making waves in the quiet Cedar Hills neighborhood. The local sheriff, T.K. Waters, along with dozens of officers, took a leisurely stroll through the area, bringing attention to some pressing concerns raised by residents.

Chalk Appeals for Speed Bumps

One heartwarming moment of the day came from resident Tasha Vettraino, who has lived in Cedar Hills for 15 years. In a creative show of community spirit, she put together a colorful chalk message specifically asking Sheriff Waters to install speed bumps to ensure the safety of children in the area. Vettraino had been worrying about the growing number of speeding vehicles racing down her street, especially as her children and beloved pets play outside. The plea was not her first attempt; she had previously sent letters seeking help on this troubling issue, but nothing had changed until Sheriff Waters’ visit!

Speeding Concerns Acknowledged

During the walk, Sheriff Waters took a moment to acknowledge the escalating problem with speeders cutting through from Blanding Boulevard. It’s a challenge many neighborhoods face, and Cedar Hills is no exception. Waters pointed out that he had witnessed similar concerns elsewhere, reinforcing the notion that traffic enforcement needs a refreshing approach in areas prone to speed violations.

In a proactive measure, the police force has already issued over 100 tickets, warnings, and citations in neighborhoods experiencing similar speeding concerns. Residents are hopeful that this commitment to action will extend to their own streets with the introduction of those much-needed speed bumps. Many, including Vettraino, are watching and waiting to see if the sheriff will follow through on his promise to improve safety.

More than Just Speeding

But tackling just speeding wasn’t the only topic on people’s minds that day. Another resident, Wanda Edwards, spoke up about other pressing community issues, including the presence of squatters in vacant homes and rampant drug use, pointing out a troubling spot she referred to as a “meth house.” In addressing these serious matters, Sheriff Waters assured the community that these challenges have not gone unnoticed and that actions have been initiated to remedy the situation.

The Role of Community Engagement

During his walk, Sheriff Waters expressed his appreciation for the support from the local community. He underscored the importance of keeping a line of communication open, encouraging residents to feel comfortable bringing any issues to the attention of law enforcement. This interaction fosters improved relationships and trust between the community and its law enforcement officers.

Community Calls to Action

To bolster community safety further, City Councilman At-Large Ron Salem suggested that residents should never hesitate to pick up the phone and call the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) whenever they notice any suspicious activity or have concerns. It’s all about working hand-in-hand to create a safer environment for everyone.

The Impact of Neighborhood Walks

The initiative of walking through neighborhoods has proven to be successful in making residents feel more at ease discussing local issues with those in law enforcement. Sheriff Waters going the extra mile, literally, showcases how law enforcement is becoming increasingly involved in the communities they serve.

As Cedar Hills hopes to see speed bumps become a reality, one thing is clear: the residents are united in their dedication to keeping their neighborhood safe and sound. With ongoing community support and the attentiveness of local leadership, great strides can be made toward enhancing safety in Jacksonville’s neighborhoods.
