Jacksonville, Fla. — A local contract postal worker, identified as Daniel Diaz Garcia, recently pleaded guilty to serious federal charges including credit card fraud and mail theft. The announcement came from the Department of Justice on Thursday, shedding light on the illegal activities Garcia engaged in while performing his duties as a contract carrier.
Garcia, 35, commenced his role as a highway contract carrier in September 2023, primarily responsible for delivering First-Class Mail across Jacksonville. However, it was soon determined by the U.S. Postal Service – Office of Inspector General (USPS-OIG) that he was misusing his position for personal gain.
According to court documents, Garcia would intercept and open mail, pilfering contents from various victims on his delivery route. This included stealing credit cards which he then exploited to make unauthorized purchases.
Investigators conducted a thorough examination, which revealed multiple instances of Garcia using stolen credit cards in different stores. Video surveillance from various businesses confirmed his actions, showcasing him purchasing over $1,000 worth of merchandise using the illicitly obtained cards.
On July 29, 2024, law enforcement apprehended Garcia for questioning. During this investigation, they discovered an additional stolen credit card tucked away in his wallet, revealing a pattern of deceit and theft.
As a result of his guilty plea, Garcia faces significant punishment. He is subjected to a maximum of 10 years in federal prison due to the credit card fraud charge, along with potential additional time of up to 5 years for the mail theft charge. Furthermore, he is required to provide restitution to all the victims from whom he stole.
As of now, Garcia’s sentencing date has not been announced, but the implications of his actions echo throughout Jacksonville, shedding light on the importance of integrity within public-service roles.
The news of Garcia’s misconduct has resonated in the local community, prompting dialogues around trust in postal services and the ramifications of such breaches. Residents express their concern regarding how someone in a position of responsibility could endanger the privacy and financial security of others.
Victims of Garcia’s deceit have voiced their feelings of violation and unjust hardship, as the theft of sensitive mail and financial information can lead to extensive problems and financial loss.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities present within the mail delivery system and the need for vigilant measures to safeguard against potential abuses from within. As the DOJ continues to address such issues, the Jacksonville community remains alert, hoping for justice and reformation within the postal service framework.
