A tense shooting incident in Jacksonville’s Oceanway area unfolded after an 18-year-old man brandished a firearm during a confrontation with a young girl’s family. After fleeing from officers, he was apprehended and hospitalized. The incident raised alarms about parental confrontations with individuals posing risks to children, prompting local law enforcement to encourage reporting such situations instead of personal intervention.
In Jacksonville, a Friday night turned chaotic after the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) reported a shooting incident in the Oceanway area. Residents living near Webb Road off Duval Station Road couldn’t help but share their concerns on social media as they spotted a significant police presence, with patrol cars and even helicopters buzzing around the neighborhood.
As the dust began to settle on Saturday morning, the JSO confirmed that officers were responding to reports of a person who had been shot. Although the investigation into the incident continues, police reassured the local community that there is no active threat at this time, putting many at ease.
The entire incident began with a shocking confrontation involving an 18-year-old man named Cerry Banks, who had been inappropriately texting a 13-year-old girl. The girl’s mother, understandably concerned for her daughter’s safety, arranged a meeting with Banks at a local Popeyes restaurant early in the morning. Alongside her daughter, she brought her 11-year-old son to ensure everyone’s safety.
During this tense meeting, Banks allegedly displayed a firearm and made a threatening remark, leading the family to scramble for safety inside the restaurant. It was only moments later that Officer Garrion Robinson of the JSO arrived on the scene.
However, when Officer Robinson ordered Banks to comply, the teenager chose flight over surrender. He took off running, and Officer Robinson pursued him. As they raced through the area, Banks was seen pulling a gun from his waistband, which led the officer to fire multiple rounds in self-defense.
Even as Banks dropped the weapon during his escape, he did not stop. The police were determined to apprehend him, and with the assistance of a K9 unit, Banks was eventually found hiding in a drainage culvert. After being taken into custody, he was transported to a local hospital, where his condition was reported as stable.
Doctors later confirmed that Banks had sustained several injuries, including a gunshot wound to his hand, injuries to his torso, and possibly a leg wound. This incident marked the seventh officer-involved shooting in Jacksonville for 2024 and was the first for Officer Robinson.
In light of this serious situation, JSO Chief Alan Parker reiterated the perils linked with confrontations between parents and individuals who could pose a risk to children. He strongly urged parents to contact law enforcement rather than taking matters into their own hands, highlighting the potential dangers such encounters can create.
As the investigation unfolds, Cerry Banks is facing an array of charges that paint a disturbing picture. These include aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, lewd/lascivious conduct, unlawful use of a communication device, and solicitation of a minor. His bond has been set at an eye-watering $700,000, a number that reflects the seriousness of his alleged offenses.
The Jacksonville community is left reeling from this unsettling incident, but with swift police action and the reassurance of safety from authorities, residents can breathe a sigh of relief as the investigation progresses.
