Jacksonville Community Remembers Special Education Advocate Gretchen Rachelle Jackson

Jacksonville, Florida, is mourning the loss of a remarkable individual who dedicated her life to the education of special needs students. Gretchen Rachelle Jackson, who fought a courageous four-year battle against cancer, passed away on February 12, 2025, at the age of 53. Her legacy as a loving educator and devoted family member will surely live on in the hearts of many.

A Life Full of Purpose

Gretchen was born on September 5, 1971, in Tampa, Florida, to James Frederick Schwartz and Kathleen Theresa Timmons Schwartz. Raised in the picturesque city of St. Augustine, she attended St. Joseph’s parochial school, where the seeds of her caring nature were likely first nurtured. After high school, she continued her education at Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina, where she not only earned her degree but also found her passion for running as a cross-country athlete.

She later pursued higher learning and received her bachelor’s degree in special education and a master’s degree in Exceptional Education from the University of Central Florida in Orlando. With an impressive 27 years of experience, Gretchen played a critical role in enacting positive change for countless special needs students, demonstrating her commitment through love, patience, and understanding.

Beloved Teacher and Community Member

Beyond her professional life, Gretchen was an integral part of her church community, where she devoted her time to teaching children and coaching soccer. She was not only dedicated to her work but also found joy in the activities that brought the community together. Those who knew her would speak of her warm smile and infectious spirit, which could light up the room.

A Passion for Life

Gretchen’s love of life extended beyond her career. She enjoyed running and often found herself at the beach soaking up the sun. In her quiet moments, she could be found indulging in her favorite books as she participated in a Book Club, surrounded by friends who shared her passion for reading. Not to mention, she was an avid animal lover, particularly with dogs, which added another layer of warmth to her family life.

A Loving Family

On July 12, 1997, Gretchen married David Sessions Jackson, and together they cherished a beautiful marriage that lasted 28 wonderful years. She leaves behind two daughters, Sarah, who is currently attending college in Jacksonville, and Jordan, who is enrolled at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Along with her girls, she is survived by her loving parents, siblings, and a host of nieces and nephews, all of whom will carry memories of her bright spirit in their hearts.

Memorial Service and Contributions

To honor Gretchen’s memory, a memorial service is scheduled for March 1, 2025, at Spring Glen Methodist Church in Jacksonville, Florida, at 11 am. Those wishing to pay tribute to her legacy may consider making a contribution in her name to St. Jude’s Hospital or Spring Glen Methodist Church. Her impact in the community and the countless lives she touched as both an educator and family member will not be forgotten.

In remembrance of Gretchen Rachelle Jackson, the Jacksonville community will forever cherish the love she spread and the difference she made in so many lives.
