A severe thunderstorm warning is issued as dark clouds gather over Jacksonville.
Jacksonville is under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning as storms are expected to affect Duval and Nassau Counties until 6:30 p.m. today. More localized thunderstorms and gusty winds could impact outdoor activities, so residents are advised to stay safe indoors. A cold front approaching the area may also lead to scattered showers, with a beautiful weekend forecast to follow. Be prepared for potentially severe weather as the storm approaches.
Jacksonville, get ready! A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is currently in effect for both Duval and Nassau Counties until 6:30 p.m. today. So, if you have plans or are out and about, you might want to pay attention to the skies and those weather apps!
Our trusty Weather Team has issued a Weather Impact Alert for this Friday, April 11th, between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m.. You can expect some scattered showers and localized thunderstorms, especially during the afternoon and evening commute. If you’re heading out, be sure to drive cautiously and perhaps have a backup plan if you were looking forward to outdoor events, like the Jumbo Shrimp game or the Clay County Fair. It might be best to stay dry and plan for a cozy evening indoors instead!
It’s not just rain we’re dealing with; there’s also a risk of gusty winds and even hail with some incoming storms. According to the latest forecast updates, including information gathered post-balloon launch, there’s enough instability in the air to kick off localized storms. You might notice how that dry air adds to “evaporative cooling” effects, leading to some gusty downdrafts around those developing storms. Quite the weather science at play here!
A cold front is making its way into our area, which could stir up some gusty winds and scattered showers. Plus, there’s a chance of isolated thunder rumbling overhead. The Storm Prediction Center has categorized the risk of severe thunderstorms as marginal, primarily due to those strong, gusty winds. As we look at the projected storm path, the highest likelihood of these thunderstorms will be south of Interstate 10, particularly affecting our friends in Union and Bradford counties, as well as parts of Clay, St. Johns, and Flagler counties.
But don’t let the storms today get you down! The weather outlook for Saturday and Sunday is shaping up beautifully! After today’s rainy business, you can look forward to cool mornings and lovely spring weather. The temperatures will gradually rise, and by Monday and Tuesday, we’re looking at mid to high 80s! Time to get out that summer wardrobe!
As we dive deeper into April, Jacksonville typically showcases a pleasant spring climate filled with warmth and moderate rainfall. Throughout this month, average high temperatures will climb from around 77°F to about 83°F as we approach May. On the lower end, average lows will rise from 53°F to 60°F. Expect around 2.9 inches of precipitation this month, which fits right into Jacksonville’s typical April patterns.
Plus, April is often one of Jacksonville’s clearest months, boasting clear to partly cloudy skies about 64% of the time. You will also notice that daylight hours increase by nearly 50 minutes during April, perfect for those outdoor activities and evening strolls! So hang in there, folks, today’s storm might try to rain on your parade, but we’re in for a treat this weekend. Stay safe and enjoy the beautiful spring days to come!
