These closures affect the southwest-bound lane of Riverside Avenue (also known as State Road 211) between Barrs Street and Goodwin Street, and they are expected to continue until the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The issue began when a water main unexpectedly ruptured during milling operations on Saturday. Thankfully, the dedicated crews at JEA quickly sprang into action and have successfully repaired the water main. However, paving operations had to hit the brakes due to saturated base materials in the area. So while the water main is fixed, drivers still need to plan their routes carefully around the closure.

For those looking to navigate around the closures, drivers will be redirected to detours heading southwest on Riverside Avenue to Oak Street. It’s always a good idea to stay updated on local traffic reports or use navigation apps to find the best routes to your destinations.

Water Pressure Concerns in St. Johns County

In addition to the Riverside Avenue situation, St. Johns County Utility Department has reported that there are reduced water service pressures in the southwest portion of the county. This is linked to a larger water main break located between Allan Nease Road and State Road 207 in the Vermont Heights Area. Customers living south of SR 2017, extending to SR 206 and Summerhaven, may notice a dip in their water pressure during this time.

St. Johns County is working diligently to repair this water main break and aims to have everything fixed by the evening. In the meantime, residents are reminded to conserve water wherever possible by avoiding activities such as lawn irrigation, filling pools, or running washing machines and dishwashers.

Upcoming Projects to Consider

In other news, JEA is gearing up to replace a sizable 24-inch water main along San Jose Boulevard. This project is set to last around three months. While this work is underway, there may be unique traffic patterns, especially during nighttime hours. Lane closures are planned, with one northbound lane closed from 8:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. and one southbound lane from 9:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. Drivers should also take note that speed limits in these construction zones will be reduced to 35 mph to ensure safety.

Fortunately, residents can rest easy knowing that JEA has confirmed these maintenance efforts will not disrupt regular water, sewer, or electric services. Should any planned water outages become necessary, affected customers will receive a 48-hour notice.

In recent days, another water line break occurred at the old Jacksonville Landing site, causing water pooling at the Riverfront Plaza construction area. The rupture happened when a contractor accidentally hit an 8-inch water main while digging. However, JEA has managed to isolate the damage, ensuring that customer service remains unaffected.

The exciting Riverfront Plaza project, which kicked off last July, consists of plans for vibrant water features, a pedestrian plaza, and even a playground! It’s all part of Jacksonville’s ongoing efforts to enhance community spaces.
