The city of Jacksonville has seen some thrilling basketball action lately as the Jacksonville University Dolphins faced off against fierce rivals and soared back to victory after a tough loss. Fans have been on the edge of their seats, and let’s break down all the excitement!
In the latest chapter of the long-standing rivalry known as the River City Rumble, the Dolphins narrowly fell to the University of North Florida (UNF) with a final score of 81-78. It was the 44th edition of this spirited clash, where tensions ran high as both teams battled it out on the court.
The Dolphins found themselves in a bit of a pickle at halftime, staring down a significant deficit of 49-28. However, these athletes are not ones to back down easily. With sheer determination, they clawed their way back, eventually reducing the gap to just three points in a heart-stopping finish. Robert McCray V led the charge with a stunning game-high of 26 points, while Zimi Nwokeji chipped in with 19 points, showcasing impressive skill and resilience.
Even with a shooting percentage of 42.9% overall, the Dolphins made waves in the second half, outscoring UNF with a solid 50-32 run. In this impressive comeback, they made five three-pointers, edging out UNF’s four in that crucial period. McCray’s performance was remarkable as he also snagged eight rebounds and dished out six assists, all while keeping turnovers to a minimum. The Dolphins not only showed skill but also teamwork, outrebounding UNF 41-36. Both Stephon Payne III and Nwokeji matched McCray’s rebounding prowess, making a notable impact.
Freshman Kent Jackson stepped up when it mattered most by landing a pivotal three-pointer that brought the score to 79-73, almost pulling off a miraculous comeback. Despite the loss, Jacksonville kept its spirits high, holding onto an impressive 4-0 conference record as they looked ahead to their next challenge against Stetson.
On February 6, 2025, the Dolphins faced Stetson in their 101st meeting, and they didn’t hold back. With McCray sidelined due to illness, Kendall Munson rose to the occasion, scoring a career-high 23 points while also grabbing seven rebounds. The Dolphins took early control of the match, securing their first lead at 6-4 and steadily increasing the margin to hold a 35-23 advantage by halftime.
Meanwhile, Stetson struggled mightily on the offensive end, ending the first half with just 23 points – their lowest in ASUN play. The Dolphins capitalized on this opportunity, maintaining a strong 15-point lead in the second half before sealing the deal with a 74-65 victory.
It was another impressive performance for Stephon Payne III, who recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 14 points alongside 12 rebounds. Jakari Spence wasn’t far behind, contributing 12 points and tying his career-high with nine rebounds.
With this win, Jacksonville not only maintained its undefeated ASUN road record at 5-0 but also advanced to a tie for first place in the ASUN standings. The Dolphins now boast an overall record of 14-9 and a splendid 8-3 in ASUN play. With the candid resilience and exciting gameplay they’ve displayed, fans have plenty to cheer about as the Dolphins continue to make waves this season.
