News Summary

As Jacksonville braces for an anticipated winter storm, residents are advised to stay warm and safe with warnings issued for icy conditions. With significant mixed precipitation forecasted, city officials are taking precautions to ensure safety on the roads, while locals are reminded to prepare for potential power outages. Meanwhile, discussions surrounding the proposed salary increase for JEA’s CEO add to the community’s concerns. It’s crucial for residents to stay informed as conditions evolve.

Jacksonville Residents Brace for Winter Weather

Jacksonville is gearing up for some chilly weather ahead, with authorities issuing Winter Storm Warnings from 7 PM Tuesday to 1 PM Wednesday. As temperatures are expected to drop, residents are encouraged to stay warm and safe as they navigate the icy conditions that are likely to impact their daily routines.

Caution on the Roads

With the storm forecasted to bring heavy mixed precipitation, there’s a good chance that roads, bridges, and overpasses will be slick and hazardous, especially during the Wednesday morning commute. Total snow and sleet accumulation could reach up to one inch, with ice accumulations of up to two-tenths to one-quarter of an inch. Given these predictions, drivers are urged to ensure their vehicles are ready for the weather and to exercise caution when traveling.

City officials are not taking the winter conditions lightly. Preparations are already in place, with crews applying salt on entrances to city buildings. The North Carolina Department of Transportation is also getting in on the action, brining roads and salting bridges to help minimize risks. Despite these efforts, residents should still be on guard for ice buildup which could lead to power outages due to downed power lines and tree limbs.

Staying Comfortable During the Storm

As the storm approaches, locals are advised to take necessary precautions. It’s wise to plan for warmer alternatives in case of power outages, particularly for vulnerable members of the household. Checking on pets and ensuring they’re sheltered from the elements is also crucial during this time. Reassessing parking locations to avoid potential hazards from falling branches or power lines is recommended.

JEA CEO Compensation Sparks Discussion

three-year contract extension for Cavey, who has been at the helm since May 2024.

Proposed Salary Increase

The committee is pushing for a proposed salary of $700,000 annually for Cavey, which marks a significant increase from her initial pay of $560,000. For some context, her predecessor, Jay Stowe, was earning approximately $669,500. According to a market analysis conducted by the committee, it’s suggested that JEA may need to raise Cavey’s salary to an even higher figure of $807,000 to be competitive with similar utility companies given JEA’s large workforce size.

The proposed contract would not just boost her base salary. It includes provisions for a $2,000 monthly business allowance and $850 vehicle allowance, alongside a guaranteed 3% annual salary increase. This proposal will go before the full JEA board on February 25, 2025, for final approval.

Context of the Situation

As these discussions regarding CEO compensation unfold, there are varying opinions in the community regarding pay raises, especially considering the approaching winter weather. Many residents are focused on staying warm and safe, while others may feel concerned about how executive compensation aligns with the pressing needs of local utilities and services during difficult weather circumstances.

As Jacksonville braces for the winter storm, it’s clear the community has its share of challenges ahead, both in terms of weather and leadership decisions. Residents are advised to stay updated as conditions change and to keep a keen eye on local advisories for the latest information.
