Excitement Builds as First Coast Junior Golfers Gear Up for Regional Tournaments
Jacksonville, FL – The anticipation is mounting as the FHSAA Regional golf tournaments kick off this week, showcasing the incredible talent of junior golfers from the First Coast. Starting Monday, October 30, a whopping 179 players, including 16 boys teams and 14 girls teams, will compete in six regional events, each aiming for a coveted spot in the state tournaments scheduled for mid-November.
A Strong Showing from Local Schools
The First Coast area is certainly making its presence known, with no less than 10 schools fielding teams in the regionals. Among them, Ponte Vedra, Beachside, Creekside, and Nease are set to battle for glory in Class 3A. Meanwhile, Fleming Island, Fernandina Beach, and Bishop Kenny will represent in Class 2A, and Bolles, Providence, and Episcopal round out the field in Class 1A.
Three Teams with Championship Aspirations
Last year’s champions are back and ready to defend their titles, with the Fleming Island boys, Ponte Vedra boys, and Beachside girls all seeking a successful repeat performance. It’s particularly intriguing for the Ponte Vedra Sharks, who are entering the regional as an at-large team after a surprising setback in the district tournament. For the first time in a decade, they didn’t clinch a district win, and now they must face strong contenders like Beachside and Tocoi Creek once again.
Regional Tournament Highlights

- Boys Region 1-3A: Set for November 4 at the Golf Club at Cypress Head in Port Orange, starting at 8 a.m. Key players include Beachside’s dynamic duo of Jaspreet Kondal and Samuel Ha, alongside Ponte Vedra’s Jack Chung.
- Boys Region 1-2A: On the same day at the Country Club of Lake City at 8:30 a.m., the spotlight will be on Fleming Island, whose Tyler Mawhinney had the envy of the district tournament with an impressive under-par score.
- Girls Region 1-2A: Kicking off November 5 at Quail Heights Country Club, Lake City, at 9 a.m., all eyes will be on the talented quartet from Fleming Island as they push for not just team glory but individual accolades too.
- Girls Region 1-3A: Taking place on the same day at Hawkstone Country Club, Gainesville, Beachside is eager to add another chapter to their story of success after winning last year’s state championship in 2A.
Path to the State Championship
For those eager to make it to the FHSAA state tournaments from November 12-20 at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, the stakes are high. Only the top two teams from each regional, along with the top two individuals not on those teams, will earn a spot. And let’s not forget that additional at-large teams and individuals will be determined post-tournament based on their iWanamaker rankings.
