Jacksonville recently celebrated the contributions of local individuals and businesses at the annual National Philanthropy Day event. The ceremony took place at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront Hotel and was organized by the Association of Fundraising Professionals Florida First Coast Chapter.
This year, eight individuals and organizations from the Jacksonville area were recognized for their significant impact on the community. Brittany Upchurch, co-chairwoman of the event, emphasized the importance of these honorees, stating, “Their dedication and philanthropic spirit serve as a source of inspiration to us all, reminding us of the profound impact we can make when we come together to create positive change.”
Among the notable recipients was Paul Bosland from Fernandina Beach, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Nominated by Baptist Health and Wolfson Children’s Hospital, Bosland has been a pillar in the community for over 30 years. According to the association, “Paul is a beloved community volunteer who has been actively involved in philanthropy and leadership of numerous organizations.” He has held prestigious roles, including former board chairman of Wolfson Children’s Hospital and Baptist Medical Center Nassau.
Another highlight of the event was Betty Berkman, also from Fernandina Beach, who was named the Outstanding Philanthropist. Nominated by the Barnabas Center, Nassau County Council on Aging, and Boys & Girls Club of Nassau County, Berkman and her late husband, David, were noted for their commitment to community needs. The association remarked, “Their family’s generosity has touched many different people and organizations in the community.” Despite her husband’s passing in 2021, Betty remains actively involved with various organizations, continuing her family’s legacy of philanthropy.
The event also honored several other individuals and businesses for their contributions to the community, highlighting the diverse ways in which philanthropy positively impacts local lives. Their work represents a strong commitment to helping those in need and strengthening community bonds.
The National Philanthropy Day celebration serves not only to honor these dedicated individuals but also to remind the community of the importance of giving back. By recognizing the hard work and commitment of individuals like Bosland and Berkman, the event aims to inspire others to contribute to the well-being of Jacksonville.
As the community reflects on the contributions made by these honorees, it becomes clear that collective efforts in philanthropy can lead to meaningful change. Such recognition fosters a spirit of giving among residents, reinforcing the belief that everyone can play a part in enhancing their community through service and generosity.
