Nassau County, Florida – A tragic incident has reverberated through Nassau County after a man allegedly caused a fatal crash on Interstate 95 while trying to take a picture of the “Welcome to Florida” sign. Marvin Redondo-Funes, 25, was extradited from New York and booked into Nassau County Jail on November 2 after authorities concluded he was responsible for the deadly accident, which resulted in the loss of four young lives.
Redondo-Funes was driving with his girlfriend, his niece, and three nephews from New York to Florida. This journey reached a critical moment in the early hours of July 1, 2023, when they crossed the Georgia-Florida border. Approaching the iconic “Welcome to Florida” sign, reports indicate that Redondo-Funes slowed down his vehicle to between one to two miles per hour to capture the moment on camera, blocking the travel lanes.
Another driver, reportedly unable to see the abruptly slowing vehicle, crashed into the back of Redondo-Funes’ car at full speed. Tragically, three children died on the scene, and a fourth succumbed to injuries two days later in the hospital. The specifics of the accident have raised numerous questions, particularly concerning safety protocols. It has been reported that the seating arrangement in Redondo-Funes’ vehicle was designed for only three passengers in the back, and at least three children were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
In the aftermath of the incident, Redondo-Funes was charged with driving with a suspended or revoked license resulting in great bodily harm, among other offenses. He was initially arrested in New York before being extradited and is currently held on a bond of $270,016. His next court appearance is set for December 6, where the legal implications of his actions will be further examined.
The community has been deeply affected by this incident, as demonstrated by a GoFundMe campaign initiated by the victims’ family to cover funeral expenses. The campaign successfully raised over $20,000, highlighting the support for the grieving relatives. The family had to undergo the tragic loss of their young members—an incident that has struck a chord within the community.
As the legal process continues, the haunting question remains: How did a moment of capturing a photograph escalate into such a significant tragedy? The Florida Highway Patrol’s investigation aims to provide further clarity on the events leading to this unforgivable accident. While Redondo-Funes and his girlfriend reportedly sustained minor injuries, the devastating impact of this crash will resonate for years with the families affected, as well as the community of Nassau County.
