Big Weekend for North Carolina A&T Baseball: A Doubleheader Sweep by Jacksonville University
Greeensboro, NC – It was a tough weekend for the North Carolina A&T baseball team as they faced off against the Jacksonville University Dolphins in a non-conference doubleheader on March 8, 2025. Unfortunately for the Aggies, the Dolphins swept the series with convincing wins in both games.
What Went Down in Game 1?
The first game of the day was a rollercoaster ride as the Aggies initially looked strong, jumping to an early 3-1 lead in the fourth inning. Freshman sensation Bruce Wyche kicked things off with a lead-off single to right field. Things picked up when junior Andrew Tinsley stepped up to the plate and smacked an RBI double. Not to be outdone, senior Enrique Wood followed with an RBI single that seemingly had the Aggies on the right track!
However, the tides turned in the fifth inning. Jacksonville University rallied and took back control of the game with a four-run onslaught, capped off by a sensational three-run homer from Jaden Bastian. Just like that, the Dolphins flipped the script.
The Aggies didn’t back down, though! They made a valiant effort in the ninth inning, igniting the field with some fireworks. Freshman JT Taylor launched his first career home run, a solo shot that gave fans something to cheer about. Not to be outdone, fellow freshman Savoi Edwards hit a two-run homer of his own, also marking his first career long ball. Even sophomore Jason Campo joined the home run party with his second career blast, hitting back-to-back with Edwards!
Despite their late-game rally, the Aggies couldn’t clinch the win, falling to Jacksonville with a final score of 11-7. The Dolphins’ pitcher, RHP Blake Barquin, proved tough to crack, providing strong pitching that secured their victory.
Game 2’s Struggles
After a thrilling first game, the Aggies headed into Game 2 looking to salvage a win. Unfortunately, Jacksonville’s RHP Colin Rothermel made sure that didn’t happen. Rothermel had a standout performance, striking out eight batters and only allowing four hits throughout the seven innings he pitched. His efforts were crucial in leading Jacksonville to a solid 6-0 victory.
The Aggies had junior RHP Gavin Sentell starting on the mound for Game 2. Sentell threw two scoreless innings but faced some tough moments as he surrendered three hits. Following him, senior RHP Jacob Halford took the mound but encountered difficulties, ultimately suffering the loss after allowing one run on two hits over two innings.
As the game advanced, the Dolphins piled on the pressure, notching five runs in the eighth inning to stretch their lead from 1-0 to a commanding 6-0. Despite two runners on base in the ninth inning, the Aggies were unable to find the scoreboard, ending a challenging game with yet another loss.
Looking Ahead
With their record now standing at 3-10, the Aggies are eager to bounce back. Their next showdown takes place against the N.C. State Wolfpack on March 11, 2025, at 6 p.m. at Doak Field. Following that matchup, they will kick off a three-game series against UNC Greensboro starting March 14, 2025. It’s a fresh opportunity for the Aggies to regroup and show their grit in the face of adversity!
Fans will definitely want to keep an eye on this young squad as they continue their season. Who knows? The Aggies could surprise us all!
