Phoenix Welcomes New Leadership at Papago Golf Club

In the sunny city of Phoenix, Arizona, the iconic Papago Golf Club has some exciting news to share! The club has recently appointed Zach Amsler as its new head golf professional and Derek Crawford as the tournament director. These two talented individuals are stepping into their roles to help boost the operations and events of this beloved municipal course.

Amsler Takes the Lead

First up is Zach Amsler, who has been part of the Papago family since 2020 and is now ready to really make his mark as head golf pro. Having previously served as the club’s tournament director, Amsler brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table. He graduated from Eastern Kentucky University in 2019 and quickly became a Class A member of the PGA of America in 2020. Amsler started his golf journey at just 14 years old, caddying at Moraine Country Club in Ohio. He has since worked at various clubs across states like Ohio, Indiana, and Florida before finally settling in Arizona.

With a passion for growing the game of golf, Amsler expressed his excitement about his new role, stating that he is thrilled and ready to lead the golf operations team at this iconic facility. Bringing fresh ideas and enthusiasm, he is eager to enhance the Papago experience for golfers of all levels.

Introducing Derek Crawford

Joining Amsler is Derek Crawford, the club’s new tournament director. With over 40 years of experience in the golf industry, Derek has already made a significant impact on the Papago team. Interestingly, Derek is the identical twin of Daryl Crawford, the club’s general manager, which adds a fun family dynamic to their professional journey.

The two brothers go way back, having started their careers at young ages working in the bag room at Orange Tree Golf Resort in Scottsdale. They’ve also both contributed their skills at PING, with Derek taking on the PGA TOUR and Daryl focusing on the European Tour. Derek has led different clubs throughout the Phoenix area, including the well-known Raven Golf Club, ASU Karsten Golf Course, and Coldwater Golf Club. His diverse experience makes him an invaluable addition to the Papago team.

A Bright Future Ahead

Daryl Crawford shared his enthusiasm about these new appointments, saying, “I’m incredibly excited with our key additions. We have high expectations for both of these leaders.” With both Amsler and Derek onboard, Papago Golf Club is poised for a bright and successful future.

Owned by the City of Phoenix and managed by Troon, Papago Golf Club is a treasure nestled in the heart of Papago Park, surrounded by stunning desert landscapes and the remarkable Papago Buttes. Recognized as one of the “30 Best Municipal Golf Courses in America” by GOLF Magazine in 2021, this 18-hole facility is less than two miles from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Designed by the legendary Billy Bell in 1963, the Papago course has hosted many significant events, including the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship and tournaments for both the LPGA and PGA. It is also home to the Arizona State University men’s and women’s golf teams, boasting a modern Thunderbirds Golf Complex as their practice facility.

Upcoming Developments

As part of its ongoing evolution, Papago Golf Club has recently seen enhancements such as the stylish mid-century modern-inspired Lou Grubb Clubhouse, complete with Lou’s Bar & Grill, a popular hangout spot for locals. Not stopping there, in 2025, the club plans to unveil the Arizona Golf House, an interactive space designed for Arizona’s golf associations and nonprofits.

For avid golfers looking for a place to tee off in Phoenix, Papago Golf Club’s buzzing new leadership team is set to take this iconic venue to new heights. Whether you’re a seasoned player or a newcomer to the game, the future looks promising at this beautiful course.
