Sponsor Our ArticlesThe Pooler community mourns the loss and celebrates the lives of two beloved figures, Robert Lee Williams and Robert ‘Bob’ Leroy Yates. Both men left lasting impacts on their families and friends and will be dearly missed. Gatherings and contributions in their memory showcase the community’s support and love for the legacies they built.
In the charming city of Pooler, Georgia, the community is coming together to pay tribute and celebrate the lives of two remarkable men who left an undeniable mark on those who knew them: Robert Lee Williams and Robert “Bob” Leroy Yates.
Robert Lee Williams passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 16, 2025, at his home in Pooler, surrounded by the love of his family — his devoted wife and daughters. Born on May 30, 1944, in Sumter, South Carolina, to the late Irene Williams Funderburk, Robert later gained a stepfather, Ellis Funderburk. His incredible journey began when he graduated from Jenkins High School in 1962, followed by earning his degree from Armstrong State College in 1968.
Robert’s professional life took flight when he joined Grumman/General Dynamics/Gulfstream Aerospace in 1968, making him one of the first local hires in Savannah. His passion for excellence and hard work propelled him up the ranks, culminating in his role as Vice-President and Treasurer, from which he retired in 1999. A true embodiment of integrity, Robert built lasting relationships with his colleagues, many of whom became like family. He was cherished for his honesty, warmth, and unwavering support.
When he was not working, Robert loved to embrace the simple joys of life. He spent precious moments at the beach, enjoyed bowling, and cherished fishing trips with his grandchildren at the pond in his backyard. A devoted sports fan, he looked forward to watching the Georgia Bulldogs football games alongside his son-in-law, Patrick.
Music was also a big part of Robert’s life, and he loved to dance with his wife and daughters. His love for pets was evident as he doted on his dogs, Al, Shy, and Kai. As a proud patriot, he supported various veteran groups and stood firm in his commitment to honoring those who served.
Robert leaves behind his beloved wife of nearly 59 years, Lynette Lewis Williams, and his three daughters: Robyn Lynch, Michelle Gray (Patrick), and Tara Williams. He was a doting grandfather to five grandchildren: Holly MacNellis (Harrison), Carson Gray, Lauren Gray, Ryan Lynch, and his soon-to-arrive great-granddaughter, Libby MacNellis. Robert also leaves behind a sister, Deborah Williams Premo, while he was preceded in death by brothers Michael and David Williams, and sister Delores Williams Bennett.
Visitation for Robert will take place from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, February 21, 2025, at Fox & Weeks, Hodgson Chapel. His funeral service is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at the same location, followed by burial at Bonaventure Cemetery. Family and friends may wish to make donations in Robert’s memory to Pooler Bible Church or another charity of choice.
Just two days later, the community also mourns the loss of Robert “Bob” Leroy Yates, who passed away peacefully on February 18, 2025, in Savannah, GA, surrounded by family. Born in Jacksonville, FL, Bob graduated from Terry Parker High School in 1966. His journey took him to the U.S. Air Force, where he served with honor before going on to earn his degree from San Jose State University on the GI Bill.
Bob excelled as a CPA, known for his sharp intellect, impressive golf skills, and a sense of humor that could light up any room. His commitment to his family was unwavering, and he cherished his role as a husband, father, and grandfather.
Bob is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Judy Yates, along with his three children: Alison Harris (David), Corey Yates (John Mock), and Catherine “Cat” Yates Campbell (Michael RJ Campbell). He was a proud grandfather to Lily, Ethan, Kaden, and Lillian. Bob is also survived by his sister, Linda Lesesne (Henry), and he was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Sally Stoner and Lamar James, and his beloved Corgi, Brewster, who passed just days before him.
A private gathering will be held to honor Bob’s life, and in lieu of flowers, beloved friends and family are encouraged to make memorial contributions to either the Savannah Widows’ Society or the Savannah Stage Company.
As friends and family gather to celebrate the lives of these two wonderful men, the spirit of community shines brightly among those left behind. Together, we remember Robert Lee Williams and Robert “Bob” Leroy Yates — two cherished figures whose legacies will continue to inspire and uplift all who had the privilege of knowing them.
