Jacksonville Celebrates Spirit of Giving at Annual Luncheon
Jacksonville’s River Club Downtown played host on **December 12** to the **18th annual Honorable Harvey E. Schlesinger Spirit of Giving Holiday Luncheon**. This significant event, organized by the **Jacksonville Federal Court Bar Association**, serves as a holiday gathering for local federal practice lawyers and judges, as well as a venue for the presentation of community service awards.
Recognizing Community Service
The luncheon prioritizes celebrating the spirit of giving and recognizes individuals who excel in service to the community. **Joni Poitier**, President of the Jacksonville Federal Court Bar Association, highlighted the importance of the gathering by stating, “We are here to celebrate the spirit of giving and to honor those who go above and beyond in service to the community.”
Awards Presented to Local Leaders
Among the evening’s notable moments was the presentation of the **civil practice Spirit of Giving Award** to **Jim Kowalski**, President and CEO of Jacksonville Area Legal Aid. The award was presented by **Senior U.S. District Judge Timothy Corrigan**, who acknowledged the vital role that legal aid plays in the community, particularly for those who cannot afford legal representation. “Jim epitomizes giving and giving back,” Corrigan remarked.
In the realm of criminal practice, **Federal Public Defender Lisa Call** received an award for her unwavering dedication. U.S. Magistrate Judge **Monte Richardson** praised her, stating, “She epitomizes the faithful and dedicated public servant. She is patient, tenacious, and intelligent.”
Special Recognition for Judge Corrigan
This year’s luncheon also featured a **special third Spirit of Giving Award** presented to Judge Corrigan himself by **Chief U.S. District Judge Marcia Morales Howard**. Judge Howard shared stories of Corrigan’s commitment to mediation, particularly highlighting a case that had been pending for three years. She recounted how, with the help of his law clerk, Corrigan facilitated a resolution just one week before the trial was set to begin. “It took away a six-week trial and gave finality for a hard fight in an emotionally charged case,” she noted.
Keynote Speech from Philanthropic Leader
The keynote speech was delivered by **Mari Kuraishi**, the President of the **Jessie Ball duPont Fund** since 2019. Under her leadership, the nonprofit, which has nearly **$400 million in assets**, emphasizes the role of philanthropy in building a cohesive community. Kuraishi remarked, “Philanthropy isn’t just about giving away money. It’s about knitting together the community.” She also shared the complex legacy of Jessie Ball duPont, recognizing both her generosity and her controversial past.
“Today, we are focused on being in the business of change,” Kuraishi said, expressing optimism about the future. “I see incredible potential. We are not bound by the past. We can build a world where all people feel involved.”
Looking Forward
The luncheon not only recognized individual achievements but also served as a reminder of the collective responsibility to contribute positively to the community. As attendees enjoyed the festive atmosphere, it was clear that the spirit of giving lived on strong in Jacksonville. This annual event remains an essential platform for celebrating the commitment of local leaders towards making a meaningful difference in the lives of those they serve.
