The University of Northern Iowa (UNI) men’s golf team stepped onto the green for the first time this season at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on February 26, 2025. Set against the stunning backdrop of Palm Desert, California, the competition was fierce, and the challenges were plenty. Unfortunately, it proved to be a tough outing for the Panthers as they finished in 15th place out of 15 teams.

Strong Competition in Palm Desert

The tournament saw some impressive scores, with Xavier Bighaus from Colorado Christian claiming the individual title, finishing with an extraordinary score of 204 (-12). Meanwhile, Charlotte University pulled ahead to snag the top team title, ending with a phenomenal score of 833 (-31). Against these elite competitors, the UNI team had their work cut out for them.

Round One: A Rocky Start

In the first round, JD Pollard led the UNI charge with a score of 73 (+1), placing him tied for 46th. Following closely behind was sophomore golfer Tanner Dinnebier, who shot a 75 (+3), landing him in a tie for 64th. Connor VanWeelden also contributed with a score of 77 (+5), finishing tied for 76th, while Calen Bishop and Brock Seiser struggled a bit more with scores of 83 (+11) and 85 (+13) respectively, placing them further down the leaderboard.

Round Two: A Bit of Improvement

In the second round, the Panthers showed some resilience. Tanner Dinnebier shone as the top performer for UNI again, matching his round one score with another 73 (+1), which boosted him into a tie for 59th. JD Pollard matched his determination, scoring 75 (+3) and also tying for 59th. Connor VanWeelden improved with another 75, landing him tied for 72nd. Even while Calen Bishop shot a 78 (+6) and Brock Seiser came in with an 81 (+9), the overall team score started reflecting some of their hard work.

Final Round: The Finish Line

As they entered the final round, the UNI players were looking to finish strong. JD Pollard once again led the charge with a score of 79 (+7), bringing his total score to 227 (+11), which tied him for 71st. Closely following was Connor VanWeelden who shot a 76 (+4) for a total score of 228 (+12), landing him in a tie for 73rd. Tanner Dinnebier had a tough final round, scoring 81 (+9) which placed him tied for 76th, while Calen Bishop shot a 79 (+7) and rounded out with a total of 240 (+24) in 88th place. Brock Seiser faced challenges in the final round, with a score of 92 (+20) that left him in 90th with a total of 258 (+20).

Looking Ahead to Future Competitions

While this tournament may have had its hardships, the UNI men’s golf team is already gearing up for their next matchup. The Panthers will buckle up for the SDSU Jackrabbit Invitational on March 7-8, where they will challenge themselves at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in Nevada. With their eyes set on making improvements, the team’s spirit remains high!
